At 50, what work might suit my limits and hours?

50 years of age, what kind of work to look for which will guarantee me finding a job for real. Has to be 9 to 2am, on a specific transport route, cannot involve lifting or handling elderly in a care home, not fit for this. Cannot work with fridges and freezers, occasional standing for more than 5 h makes my left ankle to go wildly numb and aching and cannot even walk, even if I dragged it.

General experience in sales, retail, kitchens, warehouses.

Do I stand any chance of finding any work at all?😱

A lot of "can't" .
Try making a list of what you can do, what you like, what your strengths are (skills and personal). Then we might have a better idea.

I tried to find a proper work coach and ready to pay as much they want for all this. Could not find any....I have uni degree in which I never practiced and do not know what my skills are

I used to write novels and poetry, have very general sales representative experience, but not managerial, very general MS Office usage but cannot pull amazing file filled with sales predictions or prognosis.

Socially can be very calm and relaxed with certain people but others make me feel very awkward

Sorry OP cross posted as you answered.

insurance call centre?
any call centre sales?
AI does a lot of pulling out information from data now, you could go on a course for MS office copilot AI tools or
similar

With your physical limitations, focus on desk based sales

whitefluffydog · 31/05/2026 11:43

I don't remember every specialising in anything or given the chance...even in my sales jobs, I would just contact people, share over my price lists and do a deal if they wanted...no one taught me sales techniques or required such of me....

I did several skills tests and they come me being an investigator type, an Einstein, a researches, essayist ....but I have never been in academia, just have one theoretical degree

I would happily pay up to 300 British pounds for someone who seriously can dig into my skills and help me at least know are there any hopes or not

Sounds like call centre work would suit, particularly if wfh. Or you could learn a new skill (software engineering?) that has a lot of wfh opportunities?

Basic admin assistant/reception type jobs?

School librarian, though short hours might be an issue.

EmpressaurusKitty · 31/05/2026 11:50

Has to be 9 to 2am, on a specific transport route,

Should this be 9am to 2pm, and does ‘specific transport route’ mean a London tube or a village bus? Huge differences in scope.

DandelionClockSeeds · 31/05/2026 12:06

Id attack this the other way.

What business are on the transport route? What skills do they need?

It might need quite a few very narrow searches, but id set up some alerts for a small radius of a few major points along the route (so, say half a mile from London Bridge, half a mile from the London Eye, and half a Mile from the Tate).

Let everything on the bus route come in and discard 90% immediately, then look at the others.

Once you have some idea about what is around, you might be able to retrain and narrow the search.

If you mean 2pm as the latest you can work, I think you will struggle - that's only 5 hours a day. If you mean 2am, that will cover most full time jobs (although ive had fixed start times of 8am the past 2 companies I've worked for.)

Evening call centre shifts?

Contact centre work is unlikely to fit - they often operate 8am-8pm and 365 days of the year.

After some advice please, had to have quite a lot of time off work due to various sicknesses, always had Dr's note etc etc and it's been genuine. Now HR has set a meeting up with an occupational health service. Can they fire me? Otherwise they're pleased with my work.
