Does this job sound like it’ll be a pisstake?

I’m desperate to get a full time job by June, I’ve been a SAHM for 15 years now which has always worked for us. But DH was forced to go self employed last year in August and I started job hunting as we knew our mortgage was up for renewal this October and DH would not be eligible for a mortgage. I have not had a single interview since I started looking.

In desperation I applied to the local chicken factory, processing the chickens after they’ve been dispatched. The hiring manager emailed me the times, the standard hours are 9am - 5.30pm but ‘If required you must work 2 hours overtime’ meaning it’ll be a 10 and a half hour day! I asked if the OT was a regular occurrence and they replied “It is when required” which to me, seems like a thinly veiled way of saying more often than not, I’ll not be leaving until 7.30pm.

Does anyone else think that could be the case?? That’s the vibe I’m getting…

Depends how desperate you are. I would take it and keep hunting else where if I was desperate.

It sounds like a tough job .
I would assume the OT is a regular occurrence.
I hope the pay is good .

Is the overtime paid when it happens, or included in the annual salary?

Oh, I don’t know. It says 26.6k-30.5k ‘per year inclusive of bonuses’ whatever that means?!

Bonuses are probably chickens

Are you on LinkedIn?? Some WFH customer service type roles might pay something similar (private insurance companies, etc)

Danikm151 · 06/05/2026 08:40

If they include annual salary the overtime won’t be paid.
That salary is close to minimum wage if they are including bonuses.

If you do get a job like that you want it to be hourly and be compensated for all hours worked.

I went for the tour today, OT is paid at time and a half, and it IS random. You could be looking at clock at 5.20 thinking you get to go home soon and something could break and BAM two more hours. Apparently it also depends on how well the chickens are laying so in that regard, OT can kind of, come in waves.

I have a job if I want it anyway, I’m going to have to accept. Love that for me.

Well then in that case congratulations!
