Homecooked food (chicken caesar salad) for work buffet contribution? Husband thinks it might be a health risk

I'm back with another work lunch related question, haha! I asked a few months ago about bringing shepherds pie to an office picky lunch, and everyone here advised me not to, so I didn't :) I did a caprese salad instead!

I now have another dilemma... I've opted to bring chicken caesar salad this time but my husband thinks its risky as it contains "homecooked" food (chicken breast and boiled eggs) and people are wary about such ingredients due to hygiene reasons. Is he right?? Would appreciate any feedback!

Would you eat a chicken salad prepared by a colleague?

Assuming it will be refrigerated- go ahead! Your husband is bonkers!

It’s either homemade like that (which sounds lovely btw) or something shop bought in a packet!!
I’d make the salad and if people want to be weird about it I’d let them!

Is the whole point of a picky buffet lunch not to bring home cooked food? As long as you follow good hygiene practice and keep the salad refrigerated until you are ready to serve I don't see the problem!

I'd be more worried about the lettuce than the chicken, especially if its been sat on your desk for 4 hours. Chicken couscous salad would be safer

GranolaBaker · 04/05/2026 22:04

I wouldn’t touch it due to food poisoning risk, nor would anyone else in my family .
I’d gladly eat it in your home but not if it had been made at home, transported in, put in crowded office fridge and then left out on a buffet table…

GranolaBaker · 04/05/2026 22:07

And I’m not bonkers - have just had salmonella from a nearly identical scenario (and had a work colleague lose a 20 week gestation baby)

Roulett · 04/05/2026 22:09

I wouldn’t eat it because I would worry about food hygiene - but I’m a bit paranoid about that so maybe I’m a bit OTT. However no way would I eat a home cooked chicken and egg dish that had been transported unless it was a professional caterer.

I leave lettuce out after chopping. Pray tell more?

I wouldn't eat any food brought in by people. Room temp eggs and chicken would be a definite no!

What work do you do? Can't you just all go to a cafe or restaurant rather than having to prepare food for everyone?

Duvetdayneeded · 04/05/2026 22:24

Caesar salad doesn’t have egg in it.

Parkingbird · 04/05/2026 22:25

Just a bit more info - I live about 10 mins from the office so the chicken will still be fridge cold when I get to the office, then plonked into the office fridge immediately! We also have a kitchen so the actual salad prep will be done there just before serving

Lettuce is high risk because you don't know how well it's been washed and obviously it's not cooked. The dressing is then a mystery. I think egg and chicken will probably actually be ok, but I'm not sure I'd eat any of it. I'm very glad not to be pregnant anymore, but it did make me think a lot harder about food hygiene. Once you see some things, you can't unsee them!

TheChosenTwo · 04/05/2026 22:29

I don’t put egg in a Caesar salad - is it meant to have egg in? I mean obviously you can make it any way you want but it’s just unusual to me!
I’d eat it but only if I thought you looked like a clean person, I have some colleagues who share houses with animals and one in particular always smells of wet dog and clothes covered in dog hair. They are lovely but no way would I eat anything that came from their house!

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 04/05/2026 22:33

Freeze the chicken cubes. They can keep the whole thing extra cool.
Prep the salad properly at home, no eggs, maybe black olives instead.
Use a prepared salad dressing so people add their own.

Sinkingfeeling952 · 04/05/2026 22:38

I wouldn’t eat that, but I don’t like eating any made by colleagues even at bake sales, so probably I’m just paranoid
