Being made redundant

Hi everyone. So I found out I’m being made redundant come September. No more information for a few weeks on this. I know I need to work until the last day to receive my redundancy which I’m more than happy too. Of course it’s gutting as been there a long time but I’m taking this as a sign it’s time for a change. However I have absolutely no idea what I want to do. I want to take September to myself but I’m wondering when to start job hunting. I’ve been looking and updating my CV. Do I tell potential employers I’m available from October due to the redundancy policy. Do employers wait or will they accept this? The reason I want to take a month out is because I’m having to cancel my summer holidays technically have not a-cured enough holidays to take them without owing money off my last wages.

what did you all do if you were in this situation. Tell me your job roles if you can so I feel inspired. Right now I’m just feeling meh! But know it will be absolutely okay.

Sorry to hear this OP. I was made redundant after 18 years at a company - i had no dependents at the time and DH was working so the first thing i did was take a few months off for myself (it was over summer)

I got my CV sorted, then applied for jobs. In the end an ex-colleague who had set up in business gave me a job so it was ok.

But the job market is bonkers now so I'm not sure if that would work now. I got made redundant again at the end of Dec 24, and it has been a flipping nightmare. It took 15 months before i even got an interview (then got offered 4 jobs within a week, so no idea what all that was about)

Good luck

That is rotten news at least you have time to sort things out and to prove this, you have made a very sensible choice about your holiday.
Will you get a decent payoff, statutory minimum or an enhanced, company specific one?
How old are you (I take it you are not in a position to take early retirement)?
Are you confident about securing a new role?

Honestly i'd be doing the bare bare minimum at your job now (it cant be thet important thry are firing you,!) and start your job hunt on company time.

So I’m 34 10+ years service. I am a single parent to 1 DD who’s 12. We will find out about pay outs in the next few weeks. Should be decent enough and I’ve started to save some by as I leave right after my last wage and should be paid any holiday pay I’m due back. I feel like I might be okay for another job but again it’s one of those things do I start now looking and hoping I can secure something for end of September/october. I have lots of customer service experience and more recently in a tech kind of role for years. Done admin as well. Not sure what I’d want to do. Of course if needs be I’ll take something to tide me over until I get a job/career I wanted. It’s a weird situation to be in never happened to me before. I’m trying to be positive about it all because otherwise I might end up getting really down and depressed about it all. I’d love to do the bare minimum but unfortunately I don’t want it to bite me in the bum when it comes to the redundancy package and I actually like my job so still want to make the effort in case anything internal comes up xx

The professional thing is to carry on working properly, right up until you leave. It doesn't help your pay out, but it is the right thing to do, especially at your age.

I would start looking now, because if you get any interviews etc, it will be practice for later. End of september is awkward as many companies don't really look for new people over the summer break. But with the job market as it is right now i wouldn't leave it all to chance.

I have been made redundant this week, well really it was the end of a four years fixed term project ( charity sector). They have paid me a few thousand in redundancy. I was planning to take the summer off then start to job hunt . I am late fifties so was worried about getting anything else. However I have ended up being offered two jobs in the past couple of weeks and a really awkward situation where I had accepted one and had to turn it down for the other. I hate messing people around or letting anyone down. The one I have accepted is in my real area of expertise and something I'm really interested in so I'm hoping it works out.
Anyway, I am hoping my choice works out and I will hopefully have one month off to re-set and de-stress.
I am in the charity sector- advice work, benefits, social care advice etc.
Good luck with finding something else.

I’m so glad you were able to get a job so quickly. I really hope it works out for you ☺️

Please put effort into researching organisations you’d like to work for- and network. Contacts and connections really matter- people you’ve worked with in the past etc….

AImportantMermaid · 02/05/2026 14:54

I’d take my time now researching companies you’d like to work for, potential roles you might like to do, do a skills analysis to understand what skills are transferable. I’d also look at doing some courses on LinkedIn Learning or Coursera to show evidence of CPD and up to date training, and to ‘fine tune’ yourself for the kind of roles you want to do. If your company offers outplacement support take it - I know people who have and they found it very useful. And network, network, network. Get on LinkedIn to refresh your connections and make some posts about all the amazing work you’ve been doing. Follow some industry leaders and join some relevant professional groups - then by July/August you can post that your contract is coming to an end and you’re open for new opportunities from October.

I have just been made redundant too, I've never been out of work before. I work in the creative industries and jobs are few and far between but I've no idea what else to do, maybe become a post woman! Good luck with your search at least you have until September to save as much as you can.
