Stay in a comfortable role or take a senior post elsewhere?

Next Step - What to do?

Girlies, I need your help.

I've been in healthcare for 15 years, and I gotta say, it's a great industry to be in - pay's good, perks are fab, and I love the work. However, I've been feeling stuck for a while now. No real opportunity for progression, and I'm starting to feel like I'm just a warm body.

I've recently been offered a new job as a senior manager at a different firm, which isnt much more money, but is a senior title.

My current manager has asked me to reconsider my notice period and stay, but let's be real, he's not offering me a promotion or anything to make me want to stick around 😔.

Thing is, I get along with him really well, and I do actually love my job, but Im seeing so many others surpass me and im not going anywhere. But at the same time, I can't help but feel like I'm just being used as a bench warmer with no real future prospects.

Do I just settle for an easy life, or take a chance on something new? Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Did it work out for you?

TL;DR: Stuck in healthcare with no progression, offered new job as senior manager, current manager wants me to stay but no promotion on offer. Stay or go?

You need to write yourself the pros and cons of each. To move for the sake of a title is imo, ridiculous, as is to compare your life to others.
So what’s the difference to you in salary, pension, benefits, commute and commuting costs, hours to be worked, holidays etc etc. Do you want a career trajectory and which one will give you that or will you be nd up having to move on yet again? I hat is peace of mind and stability in your current job worth to you? Do you want to live to work or work to live - and which position will give you that option.

What does "being used as a bench warmer" mean?

begonefoulclutter · 12/04/2026 18:07

Seems to me that the new company is offering a huge step up in job title plus all the responsibilities, but without the huge increase in salary to go with it.

What would make you stay where you are? Tell your current manager what they would need to offer you in order for them to persuade you to stay. Find out what that is, and then decide.

I think if the pay rise was worth it you wouldn’t be questions the decision.

Find a better job - or take this one for 6 months and move again for the money.

I’d look for another role altogether. Unless you’re unhappy it’s rarely worth moving companies for less than 15%.
Also “Girlies” - seriously?

A hard working and reliable staff member who fills gaps until no longer needed. Lay offs are in the next 12 months.

If you can't decide, it might be that neither option is right for you. What other options can you generate?

Yes its a smaller company so the salary isnt great to be honest. Im hoping it will be a step to something better in the future
