Submitted flexible request over 2 months ago - should I push for answer?

I am on mat leave due to return in July. I submitted a request for flexible working beginning of Feb. Had a meeting with HR and managers to discuss towards end of March. It’s now been over 2 months since I submitted request - should I chase HR for answer? I feel a bit anxious about the outcome. Feeling a bit in limbo. At the same time they are busy etc…

Yes I would, surely you need to sort childcare?

PinkFrogss · 10/04/2026 07:48

What was discussed at the meeting and what note did it end on?

But yes you should chase, preferably in writing

LordEmsworth · 10/04/2026 07:50

I don't understand why you wouldn't chase?

Legally they're required to reply within 2 months, I wouldn't necessarily start by making that point - but how long are you planning to wait otherwise?

Ilikewinter · 10/04/2026 07:58

Yes! As PP said they have to reply within 2 months. Have a look on the ACAS website, loads of info about the process, and blank letter templates should you need them.

If you had a meeting at the end of March that’s only 2 weeks ago, not 2 months. What was agreed at the end of that meeting?

Treetopbird · 10/04/2026 08:29

@TeenagersAngst my understanding is 2 months starts from date of submission of the request? In the meeting it was decided HR was to meet with managers again to confirm outcome and then they’ll come back to me.

Did they set out a timeframe? Did you ask for one?

But yes, you’re right that a decision must be reached within 2 months. Perhaps contact the relevant parties again to ask about the deadline being missed.

Yes, chase. You should have received a decision by now.

Employers must consider flexible working requests in a ‘reasonable manner’.
They must make a decision within 2 months of the request (or longer if agreed with the employee).

Flexible working

Requesting flexible working, how to make an application, what business reasons an employer can give to reject an application and how to appeal.

Yes chase them. Especially if you need to arrange childcare.

Thanks everyone. I will ask for an update next week.
