Career in sales??

Looking some advice, career advice really! I'm in my mid 20s, I currently work in a jewellers. Fell into it by accident after I finished uni (MFL degree, waste of time, rubbish uni experience😢). I didn't know if I would like it but in fact I really do and I'm good at my job, if I do say so myself. I get a lot of positive feedback from customers and tend to do well with sales and meeting my quarterly targets.

It's certainly not a forever job, as much as I like the job, the company itself isn't great and there's no opportunities to increase my hours (I'm only part time/4 days).

Originally I was going to be a teacher, I didn't really want to do it but I didn't know what else to do and the 6 week summer holiday used to appeal, except now I've realised I actually like being in work and like being able to pick my holidays. I'm so excited to get back to selling this week after having been off for Easter 😆

Now I'm seriously considering making a career out of sales. Not jewellery but moving into either estate agency or the automotive industry. I know sales requires you to give up a lot of free time, weekends, late finishes, doing work when you're not actually in work... but I do all that now anyway and I love it! I'm just wondering is it practical, is there enough money to be made? My dream is to buy a home (as a single woman too) so I worry that being on a low-ish basic salary with commission may affect my ability to get a mortgage.

I'm interested to hear from any mumsnetters who have worked in the sales/estate agency/automotive industry long term and how it's panned out for you. Or if it hasn't!!😬

I'm not sure about estate agent/ car sales but curve ball.... have you thought about fundraising? It's basically sales but tends to be less cut-throat. I did an MFL degree and it's suited my skills well (I'm in proposal writing). Good luck whichever way you go!

If you enjoy it then it’s sensible to look at making a career from sales. Rather than focus on retail have you looked at industry? All businesses need good sales people, and the hours would be office hours.
