Struggling to return to full-time work after career break and divorce

I don’t know if anybody will be able to assist, but
I had a good career up until 2018 when I went travelling for awhile because it was a bit of a now or never moment with the children
We literally just backpacked around the world for two years. I got various temporary positions along the way.
Life was amazing
Got back to UK got divorced
I’ve not been able to get back into full-time work ever since
I had some temporary fixed term contracts
I have CIPD qualifications in HR, level seven so the meaty stuff
I am also part Qualified ACCA the intention was to be shooting for the CEO roles at some point having him work my way up to CFO
I’ve definitely hit the ceiling at Finance manager and now I can’t even get roles bookkeeping and doing credit control
I’m honestly at my wits end. I need to earn 30,000 a year just to keep the lights on and nobody is coming back to me.

Can you start your own company? Then you would be ceo.

I did the opposite to you, i didn't stop pushing. I can get the roles but am burnt out. I assumed that if I didn't keep pushing away, I'd end up in the position you are in unfortunately, silly really as I bet you have tons of energy and much to contribute

I go random round in circles with this because yes, I agree with you. That is the most logical answer and that I employee people to do the Sales side of it.
I’m just mildly terrified of that scenario

You sound pretty capable, maybe you need a partner who complements your skills.

Do you have an idea of what business you might do if you had the chance? I wonder if your travelling experience might help you.

A partner even to help me with the accountability would be an enormous help. I found a couple of people who I thought would be really good candidates but they’re struggling with their own battles with mental health and physical health so it’s tricky the people that are probably best served and best suited to Assist are probably struggling in the same way that I am.
I’m gonna put together a few ideas and then I might come back to the thread and ask you guys to sanity Check them if that’s okay ?

Sure. Maybe you need to find someone who you don't know yet to partner with. There are lots of meet ups in cities like London and Manchester but I'm sure there are other places to find the right person. It really depends what you want to do - online business, open a physical business, etc

I don’t know whether this will get me the responses I need as quickly as I need them but I have an interview today at 2 pm for a role that I don’t particularly want and never did
But there are advertising another position within the organisation that I am qualified for and that I would much prefer and of course it’s paying £15,000 a year more
They don’t seem to be able to join the dots. I asked the person that is interviewing me today. It’s a second interview if they would be able to introduce me to the person that’s recruiting for the other role.
And they said no, that person isn’t based in the office
And if I wanted to apply for the other position I needed to do so online which I have done
But it just feels like a bit of a waste of time going for this first job
Equally, I don’t want them to mark me down as being a time waster because I’m not able to get the name of the details of the person who is interviewing for the other better pay
In other news the pressure is off. I’ve managed to get myself a little temporary job just helping the old ladies that press the buzzer needing help

Where are you based?

PartQualifiedAcca · 10/04/2026 11:54

Just north of Milton Keynes, 45 minutes from Euston and I can be in Birmingham in an hour
