When to hand in notice?

I’ve been desperate to leave my current job for months. I fantasise about resigning every single day.
I’ve secured a new post (subject to references)! Would you hand your notice in now? Or do I really need to wait until I have a contract, or can I go for it?

(I have one month’s notice and the role is admin at a university).

I’d wait until references have come back and a contract has been signed personally but I’m cautious about these things. I’m way less cautious about a lot of other stuff that others are!

Only resign after references and contract is signed.

You might be able to negotiate a shorter notice period, although that's probably unlikely with only a month to give.
Also, do you have annual leave that you could take at the end of your notice period, so that you have less time actually in work.

You won't necessarily be given a contract to sign! But yes wait for references and written statement of particulars before you make your move. Congratulations and good luck !

Yep, I've already factored those hours in. I'm hoping they'll agree to tack them on to the end, as you say.

I agree, I might not need to sign a contract. I'm not familiar with the other term. Google suggests it's something given on your first day of work?

A written statement of employment particulars are the "terms and conditions" of employment that all employees have a right to from day 1 of employment, even if they don't receive a written contract. If there is a written contract, these particulars are normally part of the contract. Technically an employer doesn't have to issue a written contract but a contract exists for employees even if it is not written down.

Anyway, what you're wanting, before handing in your notice, is a contract or an unconditional offer because that is much less likely to be withdrawn: and crucially , once accepted, if it is withdrawn it counts as a dismissal and you would have rights.

I'd wait till I had a contract - I once had a job withdrawn between me accepting verbal offer and getting the contract because the company had a total headcount freeze and all vacancies and offers were suspended.

There are ways I’m “protecting” myself from the aggression and apathy and chaos. It’s just lonely and I’m craving to be somewhere purposeful and positive.
