Council role- considering joining union

Hello,

Ive been with the same local government 20 years through various jobs, about 6 months ago I started a new role that had always been of interest. However the expectations of the role are ridiculous. Theres simply too much work.

A few colleagues seem to work extra hours unpaid on weekends and I have a few times but I don’t want this to become the normal, I simply don’t have the time it’s no life balance.

Manager has no empathy if we need things explaining, appears to be out of her depth doesn’t know quite a bit of service. Others who have known her years still know very little about her.

Thinking of joining a union- does everyone recommend Unison? Or others?

thank you

It will depend what service you work in which suits you best. It’ll be Unison, Unite or GMB. In my service everyone is a Unison member, but in libraries for example most people are Unite. Speak to colleagues.

Nah never joined unions.

Best thing in 2021 signed up to home Insurance with employment cover.

Never relied on it or the so called ACAS.

witnessed both private and public sector - both are an embarrassment to the country.

I’d always join a union, find out which one is recognised for collective bargaining in your workplace and join it. The strength of a union is in collective action though so if you join, also be prepared to strike if necessary - it’s not just about individual representation.
