Working/benefits on returnning form living overseas?

I am asking on behalf of family who are returning form living in Canada for 5 years (were students and have failed to gain a work visa).

They have lived full time in Canada for 5 years and are moving in August back to UK. They have a house which has been rented out but have no work on return or realistically much prospect of any.

They will need to pay a mortgage and live - they have one dc who is just past 1 yo.

Does anyone know if they are entitled to any help on returning - will they even get free medical care having been abroad for so long (think they are planning dc2)? I know mortgage benefits don't kick in for 6 months anyway.

Just wondered if we have to say something to said family (IL's - so it would come down to dh luckily) about the fact that they have totally no way of living on return to the UK and need to consider this - one of them has applied for one job and was not offered an interview as didnt have the qualifications - I think they are being unrealistic about the UK job market in his field, and the mum involved refuses point blank to look for work as is SAHM and has small child (who is nonetheless more than a year old and could be looked after if need be).

I am imagining other ILs having to fund their lifestyle (not moderate) on return to the UK till they find the "perfect" job. I know that if they choose to do so it is their choice and nothing to do with me, but I dont want people I care about being taken for a ride!

Are they entitled to any help, or not?

TIA!

Weegiemum I have no idea about benefits or anything like that, but I think people find this site helpful in terms of working out what they can get.

If you don't get much more of a response here you could try posting this in Legal/Money matters as well.
