build a website? how?

PersephoneSnape · 17/06/2008 11:01

following from the intro topic. I need to build myself a website in a coupel of weeks I work full time as well as my self employment, so need something relatively simple, yet stylish and preferably as cheap as possible.

I've got my domain name sorted out - now what? has anyone used Nvu to build their own page? can anyone hold my hand through this ardous process?

please feel free to link your page so i can see what you're talking about!

Persephone: Always best to keep your domain registration separate. I have my domain reg separate from my hosting, partly cos of price but also cos of control. I also register my .com separately from my .co.uk address for both price and control reasons.

If the hosting site falls over, I can still redirect it through the domain company. If the domain reg falls over, I probably don't care (unless I need to renew the domain!).

You often find it hard to regain control of the domain with cheap bundles, so you've done the right thing!

And another thing - why not drop an email to a couple of MrSite shop owners and ask them what they think about it. I usually find people are happy to share.

fab site fashionsista. Did you have any web building experience before?
How did your swapnight go?

navyeyelasH · 29/06/2008 18:58

To the OP. Don't know if this is any good to you but thought I would let you know.

I work as a nanny and set up a website to also tout some ad-hoc services I offer. Having no money and no experience of making a website I hit the local library and came up with this very very basic but does the job website www.hayleyevans.co.uk

I'm venturing out into the world of webdesign and programming as a hobby. If you give me some design idea maybe I can make something for you??

Depends if you're in a massive rush though!

TracyK · 29/06/2008 22:11

Thanks navyeyelash - I'm not in any hurry - still have a month or so till I need to drum up some business.

I'm offering accountancy/management accounts/word processing and spreadsheet training type stuff. But really only need a website similar to yours - nothing overly complicated.

I've looked and there is no-one with www.myname.co.uk - should I just use that or try and get a company type name for it?

TracyK · 29/06/2008 22:12

Oops - just realised I wasn't the OP!

navymummy · 07/07/2008 12:54

I did a couple websites for other mumsnetters last year, let me know if you're interested. ;)

navyeyelasH · 11/07/2008 13:27

Also navymummy your websites are brilliant! I wih I could come up with such clever designs

HappyNewMum2Be · 16/07/2008 12:31

I have only just found this thread, but thought it worth mentioning the free opensource web development php platform called Joomla. It is pretty good, ultra flexible and free!!

I used it to set up a site for my dh complete with a Protx Credit Card Payment process for the online shop. It has thousands of users, and these all support the product for free. It is much better than the build a site packages that we investigated before we decided that I would become the in-house web developer!! www.mac1motorsports.co.uk

If anyone would like any more info, let me know here, and I will do my best to help.

loopyredangel · 04/08/2008 22:48

I used mr.site for my sites, its great that you can add things to it without much hassle, if you pc friendly you can even copy and paste some aspects of there design and tie it into your header. I love it, I would love to help out small businesses who are completely pc shy and design them via mr.site. I also wish I could design websites from scratch but I am not that good at understanding the programming language needed. Check out if you like - www.carrottopart.com and www.chalet136.com

Kick me if you want to. I love your work and have been on Mn a while and when I saw your link to your site I was excited. But, I hate it. I hate the black and chunky words, for me it doesn't work with your products. As I say kick me if you want to, just wanted to be honest as I love your work

sorry

sorry

i am going now, sorry

loopyredangel · 05/08/2008 23:10

okay.....don't really know what to say to that! I know it's a lot better than some out there, not exactly any constructive advise in there snora.
Thank goodness you like my work lol

loopyredangel · 05/08/2008 23:15

I thought the black helped my logo to stand out more, so I chose black, orange and white as it was bold and modern. The colours where dictated by the name really. Another colour background wouldn't really work with orange.

SNoraWotzThat · 05/08/2008 23:27

sorry loopy

Your work is very creative and I saw a website and it doesn't do it any justice. I know my comments weren't very constructive, but your web pages and products are very different to each other. Sorry.

I see where you are coming from with the colours and name. The orange and black do contrast. Orange looks nice with blues and greens, orange is a good call to action colour like this site for instance.

Softer, smaller fonts, it needs some tenderness. At the moment it shouts and it shouts to me "im a hard rocker" and not "im a creative thinker"....sorry yet again....

love the products FWIW

lovelysongbird · 05/08/2008 23:34

fasionist, do you get many customer through your website?
its v nice

SNoraWotzThat · 05/08/2008 23:35

I love this site I found today created by this freelance designer you can see the link on the tree.

I know they are not off the self web packages. I know you can buy off the shelf ones and some look great.

I am going again now

sorry

loopyredangel · 05/08/2008 23:36

thanks snora, feel a bit better now, will have a play with the fonts, too late to change the colours of my logo though, already have my business cards printed. I also intend to be offering more funky designs for art work for kids rooms, so Iguess I was future thinking, I might get rid of the black banding down each side, do you think that might help?

solidgoldbrass · 05/08/2008 23:37

JoDivine: do you use paypal on your site? Have they not given you tons of sh*t about 'adult' content? I have heard so many stories about them being really pissy about this.
Persephonesnape: deviant art? Link please - maybe we could do a link exchange, mine is www.decadentmedia-uk.com

SNoraWotzThat · 05/08/2008 23:37

yes I do

loopyredangel · 05/08/2008 23:38

sorry lovely were you talking to me? If you are I have had quite a few customers, I only launched the site a month ago.

loopyredangel · 05/08/2008 23:39

thanks snora, will have a go tomorrow, will gladly receive your feedback when Ihave done it

Flibbertyjibbet · 05/08/2008 23:41

Hi Loopy,

can I make a small suggestion? I'm not going to comment on your website as others have done that. I'll just say its not to my taste but I love your work.

You know where you say about consultations 'due to recent fuel prices'. You don't need to make excuses for making a charge for consultations. Personally I thought the bit about fuel charges comes across like a weak excuse for making the charge.
I would say something like 'we will come to your home to assess the room/children/bedroom and discuss design/suitability for the room you have in mind. There is a small charge for this of £25 which is non-refundable but is deducted from the cost of the work/project'

I also have a website but its very less is more grey/blue with no pics etc as I work in financial services. So the complete opposite of yours really!
