Oh dear. It's the leaving hte premises bit that they want to talk to you about then.

How many nights have you done?

madamy · 17/06/2008 09:47

ah...may be a few problems then!!

You'll need to have a pretty good argument as to why you left. How much of your shift was left?

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 09:48

waht do you mean how many nights? you mean that week? i work permanent nights (full time, 3 x 12 hr shifts a week)

You obviously sound as though you were under pressure and although that doesn't excuse leaving work and putting patients potentially at risk from understaffing, you will need to think pretty hard about how the work pressure was affecting you.
I'm sure you know it was an unreasonable thing to do and you're just going to have to clearly state your reasons why you left, explore what you could have done and apologise like hell. Also, reflection and learning from this etc etc

HuwEdwards · 17/06/2008 09:50

ok, well I still think you can put this right.
You are obviously a hard worker and have a good track record (and you should tell the manager this) so I don't imagine that you will be in for any disciplinary action, as long as you show some regret over your actions.
From an unemtional-not-worked-my-backside-off-at-midnight perspective, I think you will need to admit that to go home was unprofessional.

I would however ask the manager's advice about how to deal with a situation of unfair work allocation should a similar situation ever arise again.

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 09:51

madamy - i WAS surplus to requirements though - had been double booked - so they thought they would just send me round the wards doing all the work. i always get picked on for that sort of shit and i am fed up of it. i had been round 4 wards already and they then asked me to go to another and i just snapped

ididnt leave theward short staffed

OP posts:
ajandjjmum · 17/06/2008 09:51

Were they asking you to undertake work that wasn't your responsibility?

Mercy · 17/06/2008 09:51

Yes, was just trying to work out why you felt so emotional (an ex-flat mate once did 10 nights in a row and was postively mad by 9th night)

Are you often asked to move wards in that way?

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 09:52

can i stress

i didnt leave the ward short staffed

OP posts:
madamy · 17/06/2008 09:53

Are you bank/agency? Unfortunately, it's these members of staff that do get asked to move around. If you're a permanent member of 'floating' staff, are you the only one?

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 09:53

ok i am off now to phone my manager

OP posts:
HuwEdwards · 17/06/2008 09:54

I'm not prying honestly, but are there any home pressures at the moment that you could attribute to your actions? I'm not suggesting you make anything up, just thinking it would be easier for the manager to understand (and to give her/him confidence that you won't do this again) if there were some exceptional circumstances that you could attribute your actions to.

Unless of course the work situation on the night was exceptional.

HuwEdwards · 17/06/2008 09:54

Good luck

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 09:57

madamy i cover wards for dialysis. i go wherever a patient requires dialysis. so i dont work in a specific ward. it was an off-duty mistake. this happens ALL the time and its always me who gets moved. usually cos i volunteer! but to get mvoed around 5 different wards and do ALL the drug rounds (the 4th ward i got to at 1am and the 10pm drugs hadnt beend one cos they wre waiting for me!) is just ridiculous

or am i wrong?

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 09:59

oh poor you

I would cite pmt
And the fact that in Holby they shout and storm out all the time

madamy · 17/06/2008 10:00

no you're not wrong. It is unreasonable to ask the same person all the time, and as for 10pm drugs not given at 1am .
These are the things you need to talk about.

I still think you will need to discuss your leaving mid shift though. As I said, if you can reflect upon the incident and think about what else you could have done, or would do differently if there was a next time, that will show that you are being reasonable.

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 10:04

madamy - i thinknext time i will just ahve to bite my tongue and do waht i am told

one of the things matron said to mewas "if you dont like it get a permanent job"

well, id love a permanent job with proper contracted hours - but i have such problems with childcare i cant. but i dont want to go into all that cos
a. they dont give a shit
b. it comes across as whiney

ive just phoned him and hes not in

god, you build yourself up and they are not even IN

OP posts:
HiddenIcon · 17/06/2008 10:07

Hope you get it sorted Naily.

Dontcha just hate people sometimes?

perhaps that's just me....

Mercy · 17/06/2008 10:08

Agree with madamy - you are not wrong.

I don't think matron should have said that to you.

madamy · 17/06/2008 10:08

but it is still unreasonable to expect you to do all of the crappy jobs because you're a floater. You are still a member of staff and should not be discriminated against.

ajandjjmum · 17/06/2008 10:53

I don't know whether a drugs round is a crappy job or not, but it's certainly pretty crappy nursing for someone to be woken at 1 am to be given drugs that should have been dispensed at 10 pm.

Not having a go at your nailpolish - can understand you being pissed off - but I would be furious if it was one of my family being cared for so shoddily.

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 11:23

thats a completely different thread
