Line management

I've been asked to line manage a more junior colleague. This is not on my JD. One of the reasons why I applied for this role was it didn't come with line management. I would potentially consider line managing this colleague but would it be cheeky to ask them to pay me more?

Its more responsibility so yes, I'd be asking what the new payrate is for this new role! Will you still be expected to do all your current job or is the junior person taking on some of your current roles?

You absolutely should be paid more for more responsibility.

Threw this into copilot to find a way to say this professionally and it came back with this. Short answer absolutely right to discuss but keep the tone formal and decide what is best outcome for you - not managing or doing it with uplift of course you may not be offered either.

“I’ve been asked to take on line‑management responsibilities for a junior colleague. This isn’t part of my current job description, and one of the reasons I applied for this role was that it didn’t include line management. I’m open to discussing it, but taking on formal management responsibilities would represent a significant change in scope, so I’d like to understand whether there would be an adjustment to my role and remuneration to reflect that.”

Depends on what you want from your current job. If you dont want to progress say no.

That's a valid point. In my previous role I was line managing three, and really want to step back from that. So applied for this role and took a pay cut as didn't want to line manage, eventhough I am good at it LOL. I'd now be stupid to get myself into a place where I am line managing again - esp for no reward or recognition.

If that’s the case then I’d politely decline to manage them. Especially if you’re good at it - you’ll end up with more people to manage!

Not cheeky at all love, completely reasonable. Line management is a significant responsibility that takes time, energy and skill, and if it wasn't in your job description then it's additional work you didn't sign up for. Go back and say something like "I'd be open to discussing this but as it wasn't part of the original role, I'd like to talk about how my package would reflect the extra responsibility." Know your worth, they clearly think you're capable or they wouldn't have asked.

Thank you all, your advice was so helpful and I decided to decline the opportunity to line manage. My other colleague has taken it on, for no extra pay, but the junior colleague is kicking off saying she won't be line managed cos she doesn't believe in hierarchies...

Thanks for the update OP. Sounds like a lucky escape really and you made the right decision. 👏

That's hilarious. How old is the junior colleague? Just wondering if it can be explained by extreme naivety!
