How long do you give a new job?

Worked hard to get into a company, in new role now for 2 months and starting month 3. Frankly its been a shitshow from the start. No prep for 2 new hires despite 2 plus months from accepting job to starting. A trainer assigned to me who made it clear he didn't want to train and is borderline abusive/ abusing power. The other new hire is pointlessly painfully competitive, ultra fake charming to managers, unpleasant and dismissive to others of no use to her, including me, If we were both chicks in a nest she would have pushed me out by now. I can deal with the latter but its all adding up to me not enjoying the new role as I thought I would. I'm not sure if its just new job overwhelm as still in the thick of training and a bit run down or deeper issues at the place, they go on about the "family feel" but there is rumbling under the surface. I did raise issues with line manager re abusive trainer and things improved a bit and I'm getting someone else but at what point in a new job do you actually think its just not working and leave?

I think you should start job hunting again. It might be a while before you land something. If things improve then you could turn down any offers.

I've always given it a year but on reflection that has been too long. We had a very senior leader begin with us. Great fanfare and we all really liked her. Three months in she left stating that the work style of the CEO was damaging to her mental health. It was quite dramatic but I was impressed by her clarity and decisiveness.

Sometimes things just don’t work out and you’re better off out of there. Trust your gut.

Are we talking an office job, a NMW job or more of a career job?

Leaning to a career job. I'm older so its a second 'mini' career for me.

I'm in a similar situation, but the job market is dire so I'm not jumping ship just yet. Are there any plus sides? Decent salary, hybrid working, etc? I try to focus on those. If you're in a role where there are lots of other opportunities though, I'd definitely start looking. No shame in admitting the current job isn't for you.

Sorry to hear you are in the same position. Its a role I was lucky to get as competitive. I won't get anything similar. Currently a case of be careful what you wish for!

I'm sorry you are in this situation. I knew from day 1 that my new job was a shit show- very different reasons to you though and all due to the poor management.

I lasted 8mths and that was mainly so it didn't look dreadful on my CV. My brother became very unwell and I was being investigated to be a live liver donor for him, along with my widowed mum needing a hip replacement- so I resigned. I hated the job anyways, but these were the reasons I gave- which were true. From the day I resigned, my boss would walk out of the room if I was there, follow me to my office and the second I'd sit down, she'd pop around the corner to ask why I was sitting down! The day I left, none of the management said goodbye nor even signed the card going around. I wish I'd left sooner TBH.

Well done for sticking it so far… once I know something isn’t for me there’s no changing my mind.

I went to a new job on Monday and it has been horrible… I honestly don’t think I can face going back on Monday again.

I would start job hunting, assuming you cannot leave without something to go to. The job market is awful atm. My brother has been looking for ages with not much luck.

I do try to give it 6 months if possible, but one awful job I handed my notice in on day three and left in three weeks. I regretted it when I had to hastily find something else, but in hindsight it was the right thing to do.

Middlechild3 · 25/03/2026 20:22

Well I resigned today. From my dream job in a company I'd wanted to work in for years. I went from happy, confident and capable to belittled, bullied and feeling my confidence was shredded where it was starting to affect my health, all in 3 months. All because of unchecked, unacceptable unmanaged behaviours. I raised issues with management twice to no avail. So upset its ended this way.

Well onwards and upwards as they say!

Strumpetpumpet · 31/03/2026 07:24

Good for you. No job is worth risking your health for. Best of luck for whatever comes next.

Newname29 · 31/03/2026 20:15

Well done OP. No job is worth your mental health. Good luck with the job search!
