Civil Service Recruitment question

As my username suggests (changed it for this as I don’t want work to know I’m thinking of leaving) I’m trying to get out of teaching. I’ve applied for an EO position and have been invited to an interview - I’ve had to do 2 assessment tests, and have been graded on my CV and personal statement. Do these marks get added to the interview score or is it the case they got me an interview and then it’s all down to how I perform on the day? I”m finding the whole thing mystifying!!

Where I work it's how you perform on the day.

That’s been my experience in education, but I wondered if the Civil Service was different

The marks don’t carry forward.

Usually they just get you an interview. I’m sure I’ve posted in a different thread but there is a good YouTube channel about civil service interview techniques. I just can’t remember the guys name at the moment!

Interview performance.

However, I've had candidates tie with identical scores across the board so we have gone back to the CV and decided who is the strongest based on interview scores and relevant experience.

If candidates score the same total, we look at lead behaviour score.

Thanks all. Just feeling completely out of my comfort zone! Any interview tips?

Use the STAR method for answering behaviour based questions. Don’t use ‘we’ in any of the answers. Have you reviewed the Departments behaviours framework so you know what they’re looking for?

My top tip for ‘making effective decisions’ is to make sure it is actually a somewhat difficult decision, not just an answer where the way forward is obvious to anyone with half a brain. Loads of people fall down on that so worth having a couple of solid examples.

The behaviours they are asking about at interview are on the job advert. They will only ask questions about those specific ones at the interview. You can read about these behaviours online.

Some questions might be about what you have done, some might be about what would you do - so you don't need to have done it. You need to pitch your examples for the level of the job as PP have said- your answer has to demonstrate the behaviour expectations for the grade.

No, the scores don't carry forward.

As a teacher you should really be aiming for HEO or SEO though.

Thank you both, I’m going to work on the STAR examples this week (have 2 weeks till the interview).

I’ve identified the behaviours and have ideas of how I could respond.

Thanks foe the suggestion about the HEO/SEO. They all seem to require experience I don’t have … but I’m looking for a step back in terms of responsibility anyway so fingers crossed this could be the right move
