not sure what to do

I started a new role a few months ago. The training and guidance were limited, and despite asking for more support, I haven’t received much help to get up to speed. My manager has been unavailable for some time.
I have a strong work ethic and no history of performance issues, but I am now on a performance improvement plan (PIP). I’m concerned it may not be following a standard process. I’m told I need to ask more questions, but when I do, I am criticised for not already knowing the answers. Tasks and expectations aren’t always clear, and feedback can change after work has been completed.
Meetings take up a large portion of my time, which makes it difficult to complete my work. What was intended as a routine check-in recently became a formal review without warning or preparation time.
The workplace culture feels uncomfortable — there is gossip, raised voices in meetings, and a strong focus on “fit” and personality assessments. There is also pressure to socialise outside work. Some staff have left after periods of sick leave.
Overall, it feels like a culture of fear. I now feel anxious about meetings and asking questions, as it could be used against me. This is affecting my confidence and well-being.
Is this a standard PIP process? Have I been set up to fail? Would you move on?

I would look for another job. No job is worth becoming anxious and fearful over. The culture in your workplace sounds unpleasant and toxic.

Sounds awful, get yourself out of there asap

Agree with the above. Sounds like a shit show and not one that I’d like to participate in

I would investigate raising a grievance so you can put your side across. It sounds like an awful place. Can you move on quickly?

@SixSevenShutUp luckily there seems to be lots of jobs in our area so hoping I can get interviews quickly (done lots of jobs with useful transferable skills). No point raising a grievance - they just seem to close ranks and protect each other! Kicking myself as I normally join a union but didn't this time...

Thanks everyone else as well :)

I'm glad to hear you have some options, it's a shitty way to be treated. I hope things work out well for you.

PIPs don’t work! They put more pressure on people and managers can do what they want to fit the narrative. I was on one as well a colleague when management came in. Think they wanted to demote us as both had good standing prior to that and noises about being a level down. I was made redundant in the end. Colleague got a settlement after raising a grievance! In a new job and happier. Less pressure and grateful of the EU experience. Get outta there!
