I started a new role a few months ago. The training and guidance were limited, and despite asking for more support, I haven’t received much help to get up to speed. My manager has been unavailable for some time.
I have a strong work ethic and no history of performance issues, but I am now on a performance improvement plan (PIP). I’m concerned it may not be following a standard process. I’m told I need to ask more questions, but when I do, I am criticised for not already knowing the answers. Tasks and expectations aren’t always clear, and feedback can change after work has been completed.
Meetings take up a large portion of my time, which makes it difficult to complete my work. What was intended as a routine check-in recently became a formal review without warning or preparation time.
The workplace culture feels uncomfortable — there is gossip, raised voices in meetings, and a strong focus on “fit” and personality assessments. There is also pressure to socialise outside work. Some staff have left after periods of sick leave.
Overall, it feels like a culture of fear. I now feel anxious about meetings and asking questions, as it could be used against me. This is affecting my confidence and well-being.
Is this a standard PIP process? Have I been set up to fail? Would you move on?
