Casual to fixed term contract

I have worked a pt casual contract for years. The work is very stable, difficult to recruit and not at risk of ending. Also, I understand it’s essentially become an employment contract by default should issues arise. Regular hours, expectation to work etc.
My employer has approached me to move to a fixed term contract. Not permanent due to a wider restructure. I can’t really see the benefit for me in having a contract with an end date. It’s the same JD and hours.
Am I missing anything. I guess sickness pay, but I have the balance of not needing to request holiday so I’m not too worried about that. It’s a role where work is easy to find quickly so I’m not too worried about the unlikely scenario of it ending- I could pick up work elsewhere
If the fixed term ended it feels more of a risk, committing to hours with an end point written down

How many years have you had this arrangement?

Fernic · 08/02/2026 08:27

Four, over 2 years with very very regular claims

It's probably because you're not eligible to be self employed. Regular work for one employer at fairly set times means that they need to employ you and pay employers NI.

They also can't employ you on a fixed term contract if you've been working there for more than 2 years.

What do you actually do?

I’m not self-employed. Casual worker status
