Talk to me about your less than stellar accountancy career

I'm 54, qualified accountant in industry. Lost a job last year. Working in a non management role now. I could just do with hearing from other accountants who are not on stellar wages, and are (whisper it) even a bit bored/stuck.

I can't be the only one!
Thanks

Hello my wages are pretty good I think, but my dh says I’m underpaid. I try not to compare. I don’t care about not having a stellar career - I just want to work and turn off my laptop at 5.30 these days.

On the other hand …Kids only a short while after their audit traineeships on 50k .

my dh also works in professional accounting and managed out a junior supervisor who walked into a job in industry at 60k. A year later she got a job at 70k. Madness! She was a total flake who was barely at work and complained the whole time about having to actually do work.

I don’t feel like changing jobs as I have tried that a couple of times and everywhere is just as bad - horrible places to work, cost pressure, idiots in charge of, work pressure, unmotivated teams.

Yes ! Mid 40s , also feeling bored / stuck but also happy to be in a non-management role and avoiding all the stress that comes with anything more senior. Actively not seeking promotion or taking on any extra work 😀. I’m not interested in climbing the corporate ladder anymore. , in fact I am planning on retiring in 10 years or ASAP. I came to the realisation recently that accountancy has never been my passion but it has given me a good income and stable career and I’ve never been short of job offers . Is that similar to you OP?

Me, I’m in the same job since just after qualifying 11yrs ago. FT is just over £47k per year. Civil service so at least I get a gd pension. I’m stuck as I’m part time. I can’t move role, get a promotion or anything basically unless I go full time. Kids are still young 8 and 6. I’m a bit bored but I have so much flexibility around my kids and mainly wfh.
I am happy though and I don’t need the extra money. I know I can look to take a step up or 2 when the kids are older, if that’s what want then. I also work closely with someone that was the same level as me and they’ve had 2 promotions since. He seems quite stressed, there’s a lot of pressure and expectations on him. Then I think thank god I don’t do that role 🤣 although he is on about £70k. More money, more pressure for sure.

I was on a 75k role that I got sacked from. Work was more interesting but also stressful. I guess jobs are basically trading money for stress really.
