Job Interview Tomorrow! Give me your top tips 🤩

I have prepped my arse off, and have a lot of notes (maybe too many?) prepared a presentation (pretty sure it looks ok) and have questions for the panel.
Am feeling as ready as I can be. 🤪

Not convinced I want this role but been made redundant so feel lucky to have an interview.

Any last minute top tips I can take with me?

Good luck and top tip might be ask GPT?

Gingerbiscuitlover · 03/02/2026 21:54

Sounds like you’re well prepared. My tip, make sure you have plenty of time to get there, don’t be late. Be yourself and good luck 🤞

Take a few deep breaths before you go in

Be as smartly presented as possible. People who look polished are assumed to be so. I had someone turn up for interview in trainers at a law firm. I just couldn’t take him seriously. I’m sure that says more about me than him but I just immediately thought he wasn’t taking it seriously and I could never let him loose on an actual client. Also, if you a question or two that’s fine but I’m yet to be impressed with questions asked in interview by any candidate and sometimes feel if they had researched properly they could have found the answers. Good luck to you.

Thanks all! @Gingerbiscuitlover- Agree a couple of questions are ok - I think a couple shows interest, more than that & it’s like you’re interviewing them. 😅
(my questions aren’t ones where you can find the answers anywhere else!)

I have found that firms now ask if there is anything you might like to add as well as asking if you have any questions for them. So I would be prepared for that as well.

Wishing you all the best.

Research the company. Very old school but it shows you're interested in the company.
I had an interview today. I had a chat with co pilot before I set off, it just helped me with certain buzz words and get into the zone of interview speak.
Good luck.

Practice saying your answers out loud to yourself so they feel natural - good luck!

HaloDolly · 03/02/2026 22:39

Find an example for every question they ask. Good luck OP!

Good luck and top tip might be ask GPT?

Oh god, please don’t. Having recently spent a week interviewing, it was very obvious who had asked GPT “what’s a good question to ask at the end of an interview” given the number of “what does success look like in the first 6 months of this job?” questions we had.

FrothyCothy · 03/02/2026 22:53

My advice off the top of my head would be - don’t be afraid to take a pause before answering, especially if it stops you from waffling in your answer.

Give specific examples, not general ones. Eg if asked for a time you’ve had to react to feedback don’t give a generic “all feedback is valuable” answer but be specific. You don’t need to use a STAR style structure for every answer but give a sense of the scenario and then focus on what you did and what the outcome was. Unless it’s civil service in which case I think STAR is expected?

Use I not We when describing what you did.

Avoid jargon especially if it’s for a role in a different area to your current work. It’s possible not all the panel work in your field (we often have to draft people in to fill an interview panel from other services) and if they don’t understand what you’re talking about they may score you poorly.

Be on time, don’t turn up mid phone call like a recent candidate (and then carry on your phone call despite the panel waiting for you to enter the interview).

Smile and convey your enthusiasm for the role - I’ve had candidates who on the face of it answer well but displayed zero genuine interest in the role and ultimately weren’t appointed.

Thanks for all the tips!
I don’t think I got it, my mind went completely blank in places & I felt quite lost at times.
The director had a very weak handshake (surprised) & nobody introduced themselves at the beginning so I had to actively introduce myself & say ‘I’m EllaMozarella’ almost prompting them to introduce themselves which was unusual.
I’ve interviewed people before & have always been part of panel intros & given brief info about my role & stated if I’d be the successful person’s line-manager / team structure etc.
Also, didn’t get a very warm vibe from two of them, which left me feeling really anxious.

As I get older I do focus more on other peoples ‘interview etiquette’ & how warm they are.
Wonder if I’m overthinking it?

Not overthinking it OP. I think it says a lot about an organisation how they approach interviewing
