New job, possible redundancy

I started a new job in August last year and things were going well. In December, the company hired another employee into an additional role doing essentially the same job. We are both part-time.

On quieter days there often isn’t enough work for two people. It started off fine and we get along well, but we’ve recently been told that one of us will be made redundant — and it’s looking like it may be me.

What feels unfair is that the other worker started after me, yet they’ve begun giving them more responsibility. I don’t believe it’s personal, and I’ve taken well to the job, but it’s still really disheartening and has knocked my confidence.

I’m planning to start looking for another role as I need more job security, but I wondered if anyone else has experienced something similar? Any advice on how to handle this — emotionally or practically — would be appreciated.

But it's only the beginning of Feb, just a few weeks since person #2 started in Dec. Why would the company hire a 2nd person if there isn't enough work for 2?

Your guess is as good as mine. They obviously thought the need was there or atleast hoped it would be further down the line

Unfortunately the emotion needs to be taken out of it. I am in a similar situation where two of us are contracting from the same company to another company but they’ve decided to keep my colleague on and not me and I’m like what’s wrong with me. But they said it’s just business, not personal. We’d love to keep you on but not if we’re only using 30% of your time!

Will you both have to interview? Is your colleague likely to be on a lower salary so it’s more cost saving? Business is tough right now. I was made redundant nearly a year ago so best to

get the cv dusted off and get applying!

Op did you pass probation, if only a few months in role sadly it looks like they’ve replaced you and don’t feel you’re right for the job.
