Help with ideas for male in school hours

Hello all, posting on behalf of my husband as we are out of ideas….!! I currently work full time in education and my husband works part time to enable him to do the school runs. We have 2 children, one with SEN, so breakfast/after school clubs are not an option for us. This set up works well, but due to an injury his current job is becoming difficult (postie). We are after ideas of jobs he could look into that are school hours that we may not have considered. Previous roles he’s undertaken are management of retail stores and customer support/services with technology. He gets paid just over minimum wage now, so the pay is not so important, it’s more something to keep him busy for his own sanity! Can be at home, at a business, indoors, outdoors, just ideally not 10-15 miles of walking everyday. Please share your ideas with us to help us have search ideas as we are just at a loss right now. Many thanks!

Delivery driver or taxi driver?

AngelpoiseLabel · 02/02/2026 18:50

Remote working for Amazon (customer services).

The link to ‘lifestyle benefits’ explains more about the family friendly policies and flexibility.

My school cook applied for her job because of the family friendly hours (and availability of jobs). She worked 10.00 - 14.00 every day.

Thank you both, we have considered delivery driver and/or taxi driver but this would require an upgrade to his vehicle, which is currently not financially viable.

Amazon was a great shout, just nothing in our area currently. Will sign up to alerts :)

What about being self employed. Cleaner (pays well), handyman, gardner and then he can set his own hours.

Peeeas · 02/02/2026 20:39

Lunchtime supervisor in a school? Teaching assistant? I know parents in both of these roles because they need school hours.

If he TAs at the kids' school then no commute for school run.

Social/market research- working from home conducting surveys?
Delivery driver- food courier/local courier?
Hospitality that he could do at night? Bar/pub etc?
Office cleaning at night?
Security in evenings/nights?
Warehouse work in evening/nights?
TA in a school?

Do men need their own type of work?

Usual school hours jobs:
Self employed cleaner -£15-20 an hour
Supermarket
Lunchtime bar staff
TA

Well, they might not be recruited for intimate care to an older lady...
My DD former primary school has quite a few male TAs and one of them is now a trainee teacher.
I once looked up the most female and most male occupations and school cook was one of the most female.

I was also going to suggest a TA, either at DCs school or another local one.

Most primary schools local to me have at least one male TA.

Our cleaner’s dad works with her and does windows, gardens, jet washing etc. Or is he handy? DIY / odd jobs.

Big firms like Wetherspoons have child friendly hours if there is one near you. They are usually always advertising for staff and ask you availability at interview. They are actually a pretty good employer with bonuses, shares and progression opportunities. Plenty of opportunities to pick up extra shifts too, if he wants to do an occasional evening or weekend shift.

Thank you all for your responses, a few options for us to consider.

It does not have to be ‘male’ orientated, I just thought it was helpful to have all the information :)

Look at local secondary schools websites for vacancies, often have office or support roles (more than primary schools).

Tiptopflipflop · 03/02/2026 18:23

Personal assistant or note taker for a disabled uni student. Many roles involve no personal care, but involve taking notes, sighted guiding, describing diagrams etc.

Hotchocolate4 · 03/02/2026 19:21

We have a local sandwich / deli that’s only open 10-3 during the week so it’s idea for people around the school run. Depends if you have anything local like that
