Hi, retired from nursing last year. Wanting 10/15 hours a week to supplement my pension.
Have looked into home care as I have the skills and would like to continue in a role where I'm caring for others.
They all seem to be zero hour contracts.
I've spent 40 years being employed..so if any one has experience of either the role or how to manage a zero hour contract /taxes etc, I'd welcome any advice, thank you

I work in home care. Zero hour contract. I find it fine. There is always hours there. I work for an agency. Some people like myself work full time, where others work part time to fit around their family or other commitments. The company I work for sorts out tax etc.

You could look into being a personal assistant directly employed by someone. They would usually be hiring for specific set shifts.

I worked for a home care company for just over a year. Zero hour contract, but specified that I wanted 16 to 20 hours max as I had young children at the time. First few months or so was great, and I was really enjoying it but then the hours started to creep up to 24, then 28, then 32 and before I knew it I was getting a 40 hour week. I went into the office time and time again saying I couldn't work those hours, but ended up giving my notice in after 12 months as it was getting ridiculous - my childcare bill for 3 kids was more than what I was earning from it.

You'd be better off looking for one to one care with set hours, somewhere like Penderels Trust or another charity.
