Anyone work in engineering or construction?

Anyone?

I am really struggling to find work (project management or project support role in engineering, utilities or construction) and I think I need a recruiters help.

I have contacted some via LinkedIn and have been ignored. I've heard nothing back from the last 20 jobs I've applied for. Many of my contacts have also been made redundant

The job market is so bad it's worrying me. I'm wondering if I have a skills gap and I'm happy to do CPD.

I have also applied for NMW administrative roles and haven't heard anything back from those either (via Indeed). I just want to work, I enjoy working and need to work. I feel quite isolated.

I've been applying for part time and full time, remote and on site but I think the UK wide redundancies outnumber the vacant roles.

I always thought I was employable ☹️. I have great references and STEM skills, experience and qualifications.

Any advice would be lovely.

Also I have applied for NHS roles in my local Trust but was told I don't have the right skills.

What were you working as before? What are your qualifications and what’s your experience?

We (and a lot of other construction firms) tend to have a lot of openings in planning if that’s something you’ve done before? We would ask for site engineering experience, but not necessarily any planning experience.

Try BT? They should have a variety of pm roles.

ForDeepRaven · 02/02/2026 23:07

I do I'm a PM.
It's tough at the moment but there are jobs out there. I got mine via an agency as I was struggling on my own to get anywhere.

How much experience do you have and do you have a degree level Engineering education and do you have a professional qualification?

Good luck

jade3081 · 02/02/2026 23:49

Atkins, Jacobs and WSP are taking on PM’s and assistant PM’s.

water sector is one to look at at the moment.

Abitofanerd · 03/02/2026 07:27

Thanks everyone! I'll check out some of these companies.

Yes I have a degree in engineering.

@ForDeepRaven which professional qualification would you recommend?

WSP told me I wasn't the right "fit" and I assume that's due to my age because everyone in my local office were in their 20s.

Have you looked at bae systems (if you have one near you) if you're in the south east there is an awful lot going up there. Your qualifications sound like a good fit.

Abitofanerd · 03/02/2026 08:06

@quackon there's no BAE near me. Just checked their jobs page and they look fantastic!

I would recommend you are an incorporated or chartered engineer. Depends what type of engineer you are to which is the most appropriate institution for membership.
I do work for one of the companies mentioned and qualifications are important as we get so many applications we have to sift.

Furlane · 03/02/2026 08:26

What sort of engineering degree do you have?

delightedforsure · 03/02/2026 08:29

what about Mott MacDonald.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/02/2026 08:55

You dodged a bullet with WSP, spent a very miserable two years of my life there…

what do you mean by engineering, MEPH, Civils/ Structures? Where are you roughly? Is this your first role or are you chartered?

Abitofanerd · 03/02/2026 15:25

I just had a call with an internal recruiter with one of the above companies. I won't say which as I don't want to piss anyone off.

The person I spoke to was so rude. Rude about my age and asked me if my degree is still relevant at 40. They even asked if me if I had "ever heard of AI?". Clearly thinking I'm a dinosaur.

Lovely. And on that note I have decided to career change.

Thanks everyone for your help though 💐

When were you last working in engineering? A degree and 15 - 20 years of working in engineering with a short break is different from a degree and years doing something else.

I reached out to a fellow ex colleague on LinkedIn and she has had the same problem. She's becoming a florist!

agree with this, look which consultants and contractors have been appointed to the water company AMP8 frameworks.
Adding Mott McDonald, Stantec and Aecom to that list.
