Go for promotion or look elsewhere?

I’ve been in my current role five years (probably two years too long) I know I am stagnating but love the company, the flexibility & autonomy I have, the people etc

My boss is leaving and so his role is being advertised and he’s encouraging me to apply. It’s an uplift in salary albeit not an huge amount but would Get me out of my rut and mean I get to stay with people & a company I love working for and on a project I really enjoy. The problem is, the day-to-day job is actually quite dull and far less varied than my current one so there is a risk I’ll get bored quite quickly.

Is it daft to go for a job merely as a stepping stone onto a more senior external or the next level up of management into a job I I would absolutely love. The main thing this promotion would give me aside from a bit more money is more line management experience which I really need to get to the next level.

It can’t hurt to apply.

If the role doesn’t work out it can be a good line on your CV.

I think there’s a lot to be said for loving the company you work for. In your shoes I would apply.

Thanks I think I will apply then if I don't get it, I really need to give myself a kick up the backside to move on. I joined this company after leaving a really toxic working environment that knocked my confidence so I absolutely value a positive workplace and supportive colleagues.

Apply with the plan to move in a couple of years. Get all the training you can. However, be prepared not to get it too. Being turned down for internal promotion is the worst feeling and may be the kickstart to leave.

I'd go for it and gain the experience in a 'safe' environment and start looking in 18months or so.

Go for it - nothing to loose - it’s experience for you and will open up more opportunities!

Thanks for the push - I’ve just submitted my application. TBH @HushTheNoiseI know I need to move or a change so if this doesn’t come to anything I’m almost hoping I do feel like that rather than slip back into my current comfortable role. Fingers crossed.
