Want to take back my notice

I’m 2 months into a 3 month notice period. It looks likely that I’m about to be diagnosed with cancer. Is it possible this late in the process to withdraw my notice? Is it sensible to be honest with my employer as to why? I work for a big finance company that currently has a recruitment freeze if it changes anything.

Whether it is possible to withdraw your notice is up to your employer. You can certainly ask to withdraw it, but they don't have to accept. It could go either way.

Maybe leave out the bit about the cancer diagnosis- see if they will let you rescind. I guess it depends on how valuable you are esp when they can’t recruit.

if they are a sympathetic employer - maybe share the news but as a business they will be expecting you to go on sick leave. It depends on whether you are in early stages and keep working alongside any treatment,
sorry to hear of your diagnosis,

I’d ask and say you changed your mind and want to stay, if you gave a reason for leaving they may ask you to explain why it’s no longer an issue.
I tried but mine was refused however the company was already over saturated, if you role is more difficult to fill then you have a better chance. I don’t feel it’s necessary to disclose your health issue as nothing has been confirmed yet.

I think my concern is there is a recruitment freeze and they aren’t replacing me so I don’t know if that means they are more or less likely to let me take it back?

Possibly topic for a new thread - I’m due to start new job in March. What happens if I can’t due to my diagnosis/ treatment? Im terrified I’ve set fire to my life by switching jobs at the worse possible time and I’ll be left with nothing

It's definitely worth asking.

If they say no, then I would find out about private health care - IE if you currently have it, but new employer doesn't, can you pay for existing policy privately.

Sorry you’re in this situation. All you can do is ask really, they don’t have to accept.

I’ve had cancer recently and didn’t need a crazy amount of time off, although everyone’s experience is different. I work from home which helped massively.

I had a big operation to remove it and had around 2 weeks off as recovery but was well enough to answer urgent emails etc after the first few days.

I had my chemo on a Friday every 3 weeks and then couldn’t work the Monday or Tuesday. I made the decision to also have the wed and thur off each time but would have been able to work then if it had been a new job and I’d really pushed myself. My oncologist was helpful with letting me choose the treatment day - I think if you chose Wed morning it would just mean 3 days off each cycle.

What an awful position to be in I’m so sorry. Yes you can ask but I’d be truthful as they are going to find out you have cancer anyway once you stay
