One of many in a large company. They’ve said my team will move to another manager as they are it is just me that’s gone. My job was only created newly when I started less than 5 yrs ago. Prior to that, it was exactly how they are changing back to. My role was created cos that didn’t work.

Anyways I am going to question it for what it’s worth. Any advice will be great fully received on more generally on how the whole thing about being made redundant and this challenge? This is my first rodeo.

Have you actually been made redundant or just been told you'll be moving under another manager? It happened to me 10yrs ago. It was for the best in the long run, but I was so upset having worked my way up in that company for 8yrs.

-Contact your union. If not with one, look for advise on the ACAS website
-IF you are made redundant, you are allowed to take someone with you to the meetings. If no union rep, you can ask a friend/colleague/family member to take notes and support you.
-My company offered those made redundant, X amount of visits to a recruitment type company. In short, I found them next to useless. The woman was rude and condescending. Why didn't I have an up to date CV, why wasn't my linkedin profile up to date, why didn't I use certain job hunting sites. Hmm, take a wild guess lady- I'd been happy in my job for 8yrs and only been made redundant 10mins beforehand!

-Start looking for other jobs
-Check your annual leave entitlement. IF you have been made redundant, they might want to use leave earlier and use your leave.
-If you do go for interviews elsewhere, remember that 'the ROLE' became redundant and not YOU became redundant if asked.
Wishing you all the best.

Is the other team exactly the same as yours? If the 2 manager roles are the same then they need to go through a process to work out who stays, there shouldn’t be an automatic assumption that it’s you that goes. I’d definitely try and ask some questions and get some proper advice.

I haven’t faced redundancy but currently facing a restructuring, while there are the same number of roles at my level some are more interesting topics (to me at least) and so far at least asking lots of questions has shown they haven’t thought about details but questions are working to get them to think about these things and question some assumptions- including who should be considered for each of the roles.

Thank you for that to do list! I am being made redundant not my team, they are moving under another manager. I am beyond sad as I love the job and the long list of people I work with.

The technical skills at the basic level are the same for both roles, but the advanced skills is different, basically they are two very different products. I’ll add to my question bank about why me and not the other manager, but they probably did LIFO method and I am more expensive.

I don't think you can just LIFO people like they are inventory, they should compare all the people in the same roles and look at the skills etc.

I would also add are there any other opportunities within the company you could do, they can still save the headcount if they redeploy you and don't backfill.

BonneMaman77 · 19/01/2026 21:58

Thanks and Actually, as a methodology LIFO is common according to UK rules…on Gov.uk website on the topic; as I am finding out.

Another question, in the letter to me they’ve said it is proposed not final and I can discuss the reasons presented by them and can make suggestions. I take that as I could present my case on an alternative proposal that’ll save money and keep my job and some points setting out why my role is important. Any experience from doing similar anyone? Examples of changes?

I see many challenges discussed but that pertains to presenting employers methodology was unfair. i haven’t yet seen an amicable discussion proposal.

Edited

If other people in your team do the same job as you theu 'may'not have followed procedures. Consult your union.

I have successfully done this twice in 2 different companies and I wasn't even management then. In the first company my proposal saved multiple colleagues as well as me. In the second company I came away with a promotion. I have no legal or business background....I just knew their new structures wouldn't work, their slotting was unfair etc and I decided to fight it.

The structure may well have even decided at by someone not close enough to the actual work to see the problems.

Think about things like...
Is the total resource enough?
Are any roles mapped incorrectly?
Are they mistaking duties due to an incorrect understanding of job role or out of date job description?
You say that these roles were tried a before and it didn't work. Do you have evidence of what happened and how this will impact the organisation if tried again?

Get it all together and write it all out as an alternative proposal, giving the reasons for it.

This is in addition to all the other good advice that you will get from others around checking legal rights , raising any potentially discriminatory decisions etc.
Good luck!

Ooo fab, great to hear that. I have a plan and I think I can tick off most of your suggestions but will check now to make sure I’ve covered it all. Some great suggestions thank you so much and just amazing clarity and logic in what you’ve set out, wow! You gave them no chance but to reverse their decision!

I will need to watch my tone when I speak. I’ve de- personalised it and feeling calm and I think I’m taking it well and no downside to come from having the convo.

I do have a kick up my arse to work my network and already have coffees in the diary. It will come around again soon so best to start feeling out now but I think
