Job interview rescheduling

I’ve been offered an interview for a job. An interview date was listed on the job advertisement when I applied. However, I didn’t realise when booking myself in for the interview that it had changed to a different date, which I can’t do.

Although it’s a Teams interview, my current job requires me to be onsite four days a week and it’s a very public role, so I can’t go off and take a private Teams call for 40 minutes without it being very obvious. I had arranged to work from home on the date I’d thought the interview was, and was going to take my lunch during that time. I’ve asked for them to change the date, but it doesn’t sound as if they’re going to be flexible, ironically in part because the interview panel have their own flexible work arrangements in place.

In their email to me offering the interview, they do state that they offer reasonable adjustments for disability “or any other reason” including changing the time of interviews. Do you think they will offer another time, or have I ruined my chances already with my initial mistake?

My friend has suggested going sick so I can make the original time, but I don’t feel that I can compromise my integrity in that way (I’m currently going through difficult personal circumstances involving the serious illness of a close family member and my current employer is being very understanding and flexible about that.)

Take a half day's leave? Presumably someone can cover, as they would if you were ill.

Otherwise just ask them to change the date. It's unlikely to be a problem if you do it in good time.

Unfortunately the interview is tomorrow and I can’t take leave at such short notice. I only realised my mistake today.

Maybe say its for medical appointment? Letter just arrived in the post?

On the basis you have already asked them to reschedule it will be pretty obvious to them if you now “go sick”. If you are to go sick I would suggest it’s from your current role and be at home to take the interview.

If a company wants you they’ll reschedule

I just had a successful interview process for a senior role, couldn’t do any of the proposed dates so the hiring manager literally came in on her non working day to interview me and set up her panel to do the same, to suit my current work schedule. And then in the 2nd stage interview I still needed to reschedule and they accommodated it no questions. But they ultimately made me an offer so they definitely wanted to speak to me. If they felt more confident they would hire someone else, they might have refused.
