Video interviews - a rant

I applied for a job recently. The job advertisement was explicit in asking candidates not to use AI to write their application because they wanted to hear from the “real” candidate. Fair enough, I agree.

I was then invited to an interview, and was told it would be a video interview, assessed by AI. Such double standards!

The message explained I would be shown a question, have a couple of minutes to consider/prepare, and then a few minutes to record my answers. This demonstrates nothing except my improvisation skills, which are not good. I’m not naturally good at thinking on the spot, I’m much more of a planner and preparer - and planning and preparing is much more related to the job I’m applying for.

Anyway, I’ve done it, I didn’t do it well because I’m just not suited to that sort of ‘on the spot’ performance. With a traditional face to face interview I tend to do better as it’s a more natural conversational environment. My brain processes differently.

Just a rant really. Disappointed that I will likely miss out on a perfect job because of a double-standard recruitment process.

Ugh, you have my sympathies as that would be a total nightmare for me. So awkward and false. And it's not testing how you would perform doing the actual job, just favouring those more comfortable with spouting the right buzzwords to a camera. You've probably done better than you imagine though. If you do want to work for them I hope it turns out well for you.
