At the moment I'm working as a part time cleaner.
Before having DC I worked full time as a purchase ledger clerk . It was easier after I had DC to not work full time due to DH being in the forces and no family support . I now wish I had not made that decision as since then I've just had part time jobs cleaning as it was the only jobs I could get at the time. ( not that there's anything wrong with cleaning .)
Now DC is 17 and I was hoping to work again in finance as a purchase ledger clerk but so far I've had one interview and didn't get the job .
So I'm wondering if I'm now on the scrap heap !
Sorry about the novel but was hoping to get some advise .

I wouldnt have thought age was a barrier for a sedentary role such as purchase ledger clerk.

The employment market is dire at the moment, for almost everybody. How long have you been looking for a job and how many have you applied for?

No way, don't write yourself off. Keep applying. Alternatively, you could join some temp agencies. My last job was a temp job (9 weeks) that went permanent. It's worth a go. Good luck.

How long since you worked in PL?

you may to need to do a short/ evening course in Sage / xero to bring you up to date. Although you tube could be very helpful to you too.

I think there is a shortage of candidates so hold on tight, keep applying ,use an agency, something should turn up for you!

Also 57, but was able to keep working and raise children and retrained at 32 after part time degree. I know I was fortunate to be able to do this. In your shoes, I would apply for any job I liked the sound of, you're not on the scrapheap yet (neither does 57 mean you need a sedentary job...I run 5k or more 3x a week!!)

Can you register as a temp? Build up some more current experience that way.

Cadenza12 · 13/01/2026 12:21

Have a look at your CV and work out how you can get more recent experience. Is there an evening class you could attend,? Do you know anyone who would be able to arrange some work shadowing? What are your technical skills like? Do they need updating? There's probably a wealth of online tutorials and training available. If you take some courses you can demonstrate aptitude, determination and a current skill set. It will all help at the interview stage.

I restarted working life at 65 having been self employed/retired for some years. I live in an area where transport is king so joined a few agencies and was never out of work. I had some IT knowledge but every company has its own programmes so it was easy to fit in anywhere.
