I have an upcoming interview for a primary school kitchen assistant, I’m not very good in interviews, my mind seems to go blank with nerves. Has anyone recently had experience of the questions that might be asked? Just trying to prepare myself. Thanks

Try not to worry. I used to teach food hygiene and I think a good awareness of food safety such as having good personal hygiene in terms of wash hands, tie hair back, wear protective clothing, covering cuts with blue plasters, not store raw and cooked food together and reporting food poisoning symptoms would be a good start. Good luck!

I work in a school kitchen. You could be asked what relevant experience you've got, have you got a DBS, Food Hygiene qualification?

There will probably be a question on safeguarding, there generally is, for any school role! The correct response is refer any concerns/worries/ comments straight to the safeguarding lead, whether you think it important or not!

Awareness of allergies and intolerances might be relevant.

Thank you all for the replies. I think it’s the questions when they ask you to think of a challenging time you overcame etc I do have relevant experience so think I should be okay with the food hygiene questions. I just find interviews so nerve wracking.

Look on the school's website on their policies, things like first aid and safeguarding. Although you might be in the kitchen you might also be asked to serve the lunch too, it depends on the school. That means you are with the children.

Being aware of what to do in emergencies like first aid really helps and shows you have prepared by looking at the policies.

Also they will have one on healthy eating too.

For the school kitchen it isn't what things you have overcome, more like working in a team, time management as well as food hygiene etc. My friend used to work in a school kitchen and as he has allergies he made the dairy/egg/wheat free desserts. Did you know you can make a chocolate mousse from the juice that comes in a can of chickpeas?
