How can I move up the career ladder

I'd love some wisdom here ladies 😍

I've been working in marketing in various industries for 18 years and currently in a full time job I absolutely love in a new industry for me, construction. I'm mid 40s and working as a manager but not of people. It's a challenging role, but saying that I'm finding it quite easy and looking for a bit more stimulation and responsibility. My kids have additional needs so flexibility is important. My salary is not bad. I'm married and I'm the higher earner and feel like Ive got more earning potential and possibly the capacity to transition to something more pivotal to the business and industry. The company is going through a merger very soon and I'd like to get more involved.

How can I go about this? Any ideas on type of roles? I love marketing and love the industry, but concerned about the stability of marketing long term. DH helps a lot with house kids etc, and he is not interested in getting a better job or earning more.

I love business, operations, and it's the people that make me enjoy what I do.

Any thoughts welcome for inspiration thank you x

considering you have kids and that limits your hours, it could in theory also limit your potential of being high up due to the hours needed for the roles etc

If you’re already in marketing I would say the natural progression would be to move into something more sales and marketing related. In the construction field this would probably be in the bid/tender type teams. Not sure how much money is in it but bid writing itself is a career path.

I think you sound great and you're thinking about this the right way.

Could you do some internal networking to find out more about the merger and how you might be able to support or get involved? Don't forget also that merger may also mean job cuts so it might be worth expressing your interest at being part of the new organisation, taking on different roles etc. can you talk to your direct line manager about it?

Thank you everyone, hello @dancingqueen345 I know the bids team very well and it's probably not something I'm keen on although they could definitely do with a female to manage the team! So nothing is off limits ! I'm keen to get more stuck into the operations side, possible less corporate.

And @Mydadsbirthday thank you, my plan is to do just that, I have a strong relationship with the MD who will be moving over to the new company so I need to make my intentions clear.

@Jonnyenglish interesting you say this, my DH could in theory could take on more of the primary carer role for our kids, and yes I would need to think about taking on those extra hours needed in a more senior role.

Lots to think about thank you !

My last 2 companies have gone through big mergers. Volunteer to senior managers and say you'd like to be involved. If you are lower ranking make sure your bosses boss knows about your interest if your boss is less supportive of you stepping up.

Lots of changes happen on the back of a merger so if you have a desire to stay you need to be visible and step up - remember all jobs are duplicated so they will end up streamlining at some point.

Get involved in the "future" processes of the company, and less the "past" processes where possible. It will help you be the key contact in the future and step up.
