How to get a pay rise!? (nepotism is rife)

I work in a great place which has a lot of senior people who know each other from a prior company. People bring in friends they know, who are nice though not brilliant at what they do so things are always half done or incorrect but they are great friends of the boss outside work. As a result, they are getting promotions which means additional financial perks which my team dont get, despite being high performing.

In my team, its very much by the book, so no favouritism and my boss is very fair. He says there is no extra money to give us any sort of lift financially. Id like to try and negotiate more money as I have done some significant work this year outside my remit which no one has been able to do.

How would you pitch this, knowing that there is a massive imbalance with friendships in the company so i might be flogging a dead horse. I won't be leaving but is there a way to try and negotiate for more whilst in a role?

Companies Are struggling overall (esp with extra NIs companies need to make ) so right now I’d be happy I had a job. My last company was not giving pay rises or promotion and the bonus was pittance. Think how bad I felt when a key team
member was at top Of her grade and wouldn’t get any more (in India so pay rises would’ve been £100 per year tops). Eventually I was made redundant but one of the lucky ones to get a job. You either need to let your legs do the walking or hit them with numbers of how much money you brought in.

I think nepotism will increase with the tightening of the noose of employers with the employments rights bill. Employers already have huge concerns over it, so yeh totally expect them to employ people they already know

@hulkincredible @Jeezowhyisittough thanks both for replying. Theres a lot of benefits to staying and im paid fairly decently so I dont want to leave. Id just like to try and negotiate for more, and it annoys me when people are just being handed the titles purely because of who they know.
