Being made redundant - what do I need to know

HI, much like the title says. Been given notice that I am impacted, there is a small pool of people and we are likely to exit at the end of January.

Can you give me your list of questions I should take into my meeting with HR? I know we can take reasons why we should be made redundant to help save our roles but that is a remote possibility.

Week before Christmas too, so that was nice!

Any help you do have would be very appreciated.

The timing might be grim, but there are worse things than being paid to leave work.

Amen to this!

I think they have to give you 3 months notice - you need to speak to acas

I had:

  • Redundancy pay
  • PILON
  • Holiday pay (untaken, pro-rataed)
  • Annual bonus (was surprised by that!)
  • An ex gratia payment to make sure I wouldn't diss them on social media And they covered legal fees - a lawyer needed to review the redundancy agreement.

I would expect the bonus and ex gratia payment.

I will ask about bonus. It was clear in the summary that we have to be in employment go get a bonus on the day of payment, which is later in the year.

I will be given 3 months pay in lieu (PILON)

We have legal support through an EAP and they will also pay to cover the cost of a solicitor who has to review with you the acceptance before you sign it.

Just remember the legal support is working on behalf of your employer. They aren’t there to get you the best deal, just to make sure you understand what your employer is giving you

i think hours rightly or wrongly was already decided that we were pickled eitherway and basically we had no chance. personally if i had the money id have had a solicitor from one of the big law firms to go toe to toe and every detail.

EBearhug · 18/12/2025 00:20

If you're in a union, contact them. Mine provided a lawyer, and made it far less stressful.

EAP services are usually independent- the employer just gets told X employees have contacted the EAP, and here's the bill.

Oh, I just remembered, I got 3 months access to a careers counsellor. He was a bit crap, but that doesn't mean they all are.

If the redundancy package is reasonable grab it and run. It may not be on the table again.
I was devastated at being made redundant 8 years ago, but seriously it was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Didn’t feel like it at the time but wow it was. Good luck OP

Thank you. I am currently spinning between, 'YAY money' and 'Oh no I am unemployed'.

Christmas is a crap time to be making this decision. I am looking at the pile of present I have to wrap and now feeling very guilty about how much I have spent.

Definitely look into resettlement offerings. The one I had was pretty good.

I was also about to undergo private health treatment. The cover ended on the last day of employment, and as my issue was clearly a preexisting condition, paying privately for Bupa was bloody expensive. Instead of the standard c£80/month it was around £300. Do some research and if they won’t extend cover see if you can increase the payout. I got an additional £3k.

I walked into a job 3 weeks later paying the same. My redundancy paid a MASSIVE lump sum into my pension and I bought a Rolex. If you are any good you will get a new job. No time of year is a good time

Backtorealityerr · 19/12/2025 00:19

I was made redundant in September and got 1.5 weeks pay for every year I worked plus 1 week PILON for each week I worked. I got AL payment which was another 2.5 weeks. So I need to now find a job by mid February to play catch up.
Have had a fabulous few weeks in Australia, thank you to the owner of the care home where you ran off with our money!!! Helping me pay for my trip😂

Galliano · 19/12/2025 07:28

I’m not sure you have to accept PILON. If you do your employment and associated benefits will cease so you will lose your BUPA unless you can negotiate something. I have had members of staff refuse PILON and work their contractual notice. I’ve also had to put people who refuse PILON on gardening leave where they remain employed and therefore entitled to all the benefits of employment.

@iloveagoodlist how has it played out? Were you able to ensure your treatment takes place? I hope you got a good deal and the New Year is looking positive.

Hello, thank you for remembering and asking. I took all the advice and went back and negotiated hard. I will leave but it will be under my terms and my healthcare will be covered. The cost to my employer is almost nothing and I’m so glad I got the support and confidence to help me ask and make sure I got what I needed.

I need to find a new job, which is scary but I have one less thing to worry about.

Just to be clear - I did not accept all the PILON. I will stay employed to keep my benefits in place.
