Chat GPT / AI Support

If you use ChatGPT to write your personal statement do you amend what’s been produced to make it more substantive or just submit it based on what ChatGPT has produced?
What’s been your success rates of getting through based on personal statements that have been assisted via ChatGPT or any other AI support?

A personal statement for what?

Sorry I should have been clearer, when applying for a job.

What's your process?

I'd personally feed it bullet points / draft text, and say things like turn this into a STAR example for this question. To speed things up.

But I wouldn't get it to write the whole thing.

I've got a good success rate in writing my own - 100% invite to interview, 1 in 4 success at interview.

I haven’t applied for jobs since the advent of ChatGPT but I’ve reviewed a lot of applications. I’m an advocate of AI but I do hate reading really obviously produced AI applications. Lots of “spearheading” and some BS. I’d recommend using it only to help you get some words on a page, maybe to help condense sentences, but try not to lose your own voice.

I’m quite hesitant to use it to be honest because I always felt that I was able to write well. However since being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition I seem to be struck by brain fog and I can’t write as eloquently as I once could.

My process is inputting my work experience and the key person specification and asking for a draft. I’ve found it to be quite simple so I’ve then added extra content to make it more specific to the essential criteria.

I prefer writing my own but the market right now is so saturated I think a lot of individuals are applying for roles that they may be over qualified for / have far more experience. I will continue to have the bulk of it written by myself and hope for the best.

I think you should rewrite it in your own words. Some companies will reject an obviously AI produced application.

ChristmasHug · 12/12/2025 13:11

Write it yourself, stick it in copilot to suggest changes language or tone.

AI is helpful in this regard, it'll still sound authentic.

ShesTheAlbatross · 12/12/2025 13:14

You can give chatGPT a draft, and tell it to improve it while still keeping the overall tone the same (if you’re happy with the tone).

I’ve used it before for cutting down what I’ve written where my CV was a bit long. But I say “make this shorter while keeping the overall tone”. That helps it read less obviously AI. And then I’ll still go through and replace words or phrasing I don’t like, or that doesn’t sound like something I’d write.

I also think it’s quite good when you are just having a mental block of “mind’s gone blank, what do I write” because it can provide a starting point that once I edit can look nothing like the original, but it at least gave me something to work with. I’ve used it like this when writing my annual self assessment because I hate writing those - I find them incredibly cringy and just a general nightmare. I gave it all the feedback I’d had and said “write me a personal self review based on this feedback”. And then I edited it a lot. I should add that my employer is fully pro-AI, and using it for this sort of thing is not just acceptable but actively encouraged.
