Hi everyone, I’m really hoping someone here can point me in the right direction because I’m getting quite desperate now.

I was made redundant from my second job in July and I’ve been searching ever since with no success. Life is becoming increasingly impossible on just one income and I urgently need another job, ideally something I can start immediately and be paid from before Christmas.

I already work full-time in an office role Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, so I’m looking for something I can do in the evenings and/or at weekends. My previous second job was 25 hours a week, mainly 6pm–11pm on weekdays and additional rota shifts on weekends, so I’m very used to working around my main job.

Ideally I’m looking for something remote (evenings, customer service, admin, data, live chat, etc) or something local to the Colchester, Essex area. I’m open to most things at this point as long as it’s genuine, paid work and can fit around my current hours.

If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, companies to try, agencies, websites, or even details of places hiring locally, I would really appreciate the help. I’m a hard worker and I just need an opportunity right now.

Thank you so much in advance.

That's a lot of working hours, 9am to 11pm every day. The working time directive legislation says there needs to be at least 11 hours between shifts and 1 day off every 7 or 2 every 14 days. This can't be good for your health. Can you cut outgoings at all? What does your current job pay? Would it be better to focus on getting a higher paid main job (although I know that's easier said than done). What's your family situation?

What is your current office role? What experience do you have?

@Username19893847477374. I understand there are working time regulations, but the reality is that those laws don’t protect you from poverty or low income. They don’t pay your rent, feed your children, or cover the cost of living. When you’re a parent and the bills keep coming, theory and legislation don’t always match real life.

When I had my second job, the long hours were on a rotation. I was not working 9am to 11pm every single weekday. It varied. But even on the longer days, I accepted that because, for me, the stress of not having enough money to care for my children was far worse than the tiredness of long hours.

People talk about rest and work-life balance, and I agree with that in principle, but balance is hard to achieve when there is nothing left to cut back on and the cost of living keeps rising. Sometimes working more is simply a survival decision, not a lifestyle choice.

I am actively looking for a better paid role so that I don’t need to rely on exhausting hours long-term. My priority is stability for my children. That is the reality behind the choices I’ve been making.

@Username19893847477374i don’t think quoting legislation at someone in this situation is very helpful to be honest. Read the room!

I did match betting once to get me over a financial rough patch. I made £8000 profit in a year. I realise it’s not what you are looking for but it may help tide you over.

No advice but I wish you well.

There is a website called Prolific where you can earn £10 per hour doing surveys. Not sure how much work is available there but you can try.

wheredoigetajoburgently · 08/12/2025 07:42

@bleakmidwintering @Iheartguacamole@parietal thank you very much - I will be looking into all your suggestions as I am going to do everything possible as this is not fun at all.

When I ran my own business I sometimes supplemented my income with a second job I did-

bar work
waitressing
shels stacking in a supermarket
mystery shopper
surveys
teaching English online
baby sitting

I've been looking for similar (and live in the same county as you) for some time and tbh they are few and far between. Youve definitely got better experience and qualifications than me so i hope you'll find something suitable soon.

If you need fully remote, then keep checking charity jobs UK and work from home hub UK, as these seem to have the most genuine remote roles.

I do currently work stacking shelves in a supermarket on nightshifts (10pm - 6am) and I find it really physically exhausting. Though I do have colleagues who have a full-time job and do our Twilight shifts (8pm to 2am). There's also a staff discount after probation is completed which can be a really useful perk.

Best of luck

Bank care work is what you need

WildHam · 08/12/2025 13:50

Btw with care work you can sign away the EU time directive requirements if you wish to

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 08/12/2025 15:26

Could you do before work? I know our local Sainsbury’s is hiring people to do the scan and pack ready for the home deliveries, but it’s 5am - 8am. (This is not Essex but assume they have similar roles in all Sainsbury’s)
