Suggestions for questions to ask in redundancy consultation with bully boss

I raised a grievance about bullying earlier this year after a year of being bullied by my (new) boss. The grievance investigation was just a joke and the appeal just as poor - HR absolutely refused to talk to anyone who could corroborate my grievance and essentially just spoke to my manager who denied any bad behaviour on his part and that was that. On appeal nothing changed except that a recommendation was made that my manager attends some training on communication. Which as far as I know, he declined to do.

HR made a token attempt to mediate after the appeal but only arranged 1 meeting months ago and nothing since then. My manager and I have not had 1:1 communication since I raised the grievance more than 6 months ago.

Surprise, surprise I am now being made redundant. Pool of one, nobody else in the organisation impacted etc. The funny thing is that my manager doesn’t really know what I do - he thinks he does but has never actually taken the time to listen when I have explained it and has laughed in my face disbelievingly/mocking me multiple times when I have tried to actually get him to understand what I do - hence the grievance! He’s a real gem.

I know it won’t change the outcome but I do think I should go into the consultation with a list of focused questions to be answered by my employer, to explore whether this is a genuine redundancy or a convenient way to get me out of my manager’s hair. I would also like to try and expose that my manager doesn’t actually know what I do and how I contribute to meeting business critical goals on daily basis - and he has made the decision to eliminate my role based on what he thinks I do rather than what I actually do.

What would you ask in my position?

ask chat gpt to give you a script. Ring ACAS.

ask to record the meeting, take a witness

Do you actually want to stay? Because it sounds awful and I think in your position I'd want to maximise my redundancy payout and find somewhere else. They aren't going to agree that they are pointedly making you redundant even if it is true.

I would wait and see what Redundancy you are offered, if it’s just statutory, then I would be tempted to say my piece, but if they offer you a nice package, it may soften the blow. They haven’t had your back so far, which is a shame, I would also tell them how disappointed this has made you feel.

  1. Remember it’s a post that is made redundant not a person.
  2. Talk to ACAS

It is awful and I don’t want to stay. I just would like the truth documented and to walk away with a fair settlement.

Why do you want to stay?
Move on!

Union rep here.

Honestly, put your energies into looking for something else so you can move forwards.
