Teaching assistant / learning support SEN school interview help

Hi,
I have an interview for a teaching assistant/learning support role in a SEN school (ages 11-19).
I have some experience in this area but not in a school environment. I am a mature university graduate with many years of work experience in different fields however I have not had an interview for ages.
Please give me some advice about how I should prepare.

Are there any online resources I can use to remember/revise my maths and literacy skills for example ?

What kind of interview questions should I expect ?

Thank you

There are always questions that require you to talk about: Safeguarding, Keeping Children Safe in Education, Confidentiality, SEN and Inclusion.

Hopefully other posters will name areas I’ve omitted.

Good Luck!

I recently went for an interview like this - didn't get the job, they said that I had gone off on tangents on some questions so they weren't convinced I could fully carry out the duties asked. I think I waffled on because at heart I wasn't really convinced I could do the job as like you I don't have direct experience.
However the interview included a short classroom session (I suppose you would have been told if you're getting this, I was) and the feedback was that I had done really well at that because I got stuck in and engaged with the kids (it was a maths class, they were solving problems at tables so I made sure I asked them to explain how they were solving etc). So it's annoying as I actually now do think I could have done the job. So if I have one advice for you it's be confident and focus on the skills you do have, be clear and concise, and just answer the questions asked.
Those I remember were:
what would you do if a child was standing around on their own in the playground
what would you do if a child disclosed something worrying to you (safeguarding)
tell us about a time when you helped a student understand something and how

Thank you so much for your advice. I am sure you can get the job next time. It sounds like you did really well but they had experienced candidates. My interview mentions time in classroom, tour of the SEN school and an interview with head teacher and deputy head teacher. They have not asked me to prepare a lesson session to deliver. During your time in the class did you have to deliver a lesson?
Did they ask you to do any tests during the interview? Thanks and best wishes

No, the teacher had an activity set up and I just joined in. They told me I didn't need to prepare anything. The rest was just a standard interview.
Good luck! 🤞

Thanks for all the advice. I did ask if there would be any tests and they said no. So I will focus on some questions and I will find out as much as I can about the school.

Hey how did you get on?

Cratos · 10/12/2025 19:57

Thanks for asking and for your help. It went well. I am starting next week. I think their need was pretty urgent. Safeguarding came up at the interview so as prioritisation and conflict management. I did my homework before going and checked out their website and policies etc.
