Multiple jobs and tax implications

My parents are elderly and in poor health (stroke and Alzheimer’s), but still live independently. I also have two teenagers: one currently needs mental-health support; the other was recently found to have SEN, despite my raising concerns for years.

A few months ago, I had to leave my job because I was being pulled in too many directions. My parents now need a lot of help, and my children need support too. At this point, working full-time isn’t realistic, but we still urgently need the income.
I’m considering taking on several casual or temporary roles like exam invigilation, bar/restaurant shifts, NHS bank work, and agency jobs in admin or hospitality. These would mostly pay minimum wage, but they would let me work in short bursts or pick up evening/event shifts.

I'm not clear on how tax would work if I have multiple jobs like this at the same time. Can anyone offer any guidance?

I don't claim carer's allowance or any other benefits.

Your personal allowance can be split over more than one role, but if they are all quite ad hoc and varied it may be hard to keep on top of and you may end up underpaying or overpaying tax over the course of the year.

Some ways to minimise this include making sure you complete a new starter declaration with each employer (as you won’t have multiple P45s), and using the HMRC app to give up to date estimates of your income in each role.

If you overpay tax you can get it back at year end, if not before. If you underpay you can often get it “coded out” to be deducted from your next year’s pay on a gradual basis rather than having to repay it all at once.

I have my main income stream with the personal tax allowance code on, (income on this is over the allowance though). My other jobs I have a basic rate tax code (BR something) so pay at these is taxed at 20% with no allowance in the mix. Tax office was very helpful. Not sure how it would work if each job would bring in less than the personal allowance but it can't be an unusual situation. Just keep really accurate records of all income and give them a call.
