How do you both work from home?

DH has always worked from home 4 days a week, has the large converted attic which large computers and exercise equipment also up there. I'm applying for wfh jobs after working in a school for 15 years. My question is how do you people work from home? Where does the 2nd person literally go? I don't want to end up stuck in the kitchen on a dining chair until the kids come home then having to balance my laptop on my knees for 2 more hours sat on the coach! No room in bedroom at all for a desk or chair and no spare bedroom. Thanks all

My DP has smallest spare bedroom set up as his office and I use the smallest reception room for mine, I appreciate that we’re fortunate as it’s a quite a big house with several reception rooms so we’re both able to have our own dedicated office areas.

Our bedroom is big enough for a desk and I go in there. Husband in small spare room. I think you need two spaces, somehow.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 16/11/2025 23:08

Do you have a separate dining room?
You can create a space in the gap between the chinmey breast.

You can create a flip down one.

Or you could give the attic to the kids if same sex?

In your circs i'd be inclined to partion for the attic and add soundproofing.

All this "you both need dedicated work spaces" - you realise not everyone has huge houses?!

My DH works in our spare room. I return to work from mat leave soon and no idea where I'm going to put a desk. No space downstairs. We don't even have a dining table. Will have to squeeze a desk into our main bedroom, blocking off the wardrobe.

Jealous of everyone else with plenty of space!

Having a spare room is “plenty of space”, though.

ThePoshUns · 17/11/2025 08:19

Do you have a bay window anywhere in the house? I have my desk in the bay of my sitting room.

FlappicusSmith · 17/11/2025 16:18

We both have (small) offices at home. On separate floors because DH types really fucking loudly and also takes a lot of calls during the day, whereas my work is 'quiet' work. When we rennovated our house a few years ago we took this into consideration, so essentially one of my kids has a smaller bedroom and one of our downstairs rooms is smaller to allow for the offices.

However, we lived in a miniscule rental place during our building works and still managed to find separate work spaces. Even though our bedroom was very small, I squeezed a desk in there for me and DH worked at the kitchen table. It actually worked completely fine. But then DH can pretty much work anywhere, whereas I need the planets to be perfectly aligned and the desk to be set up just right, etc in order to buckle down procrastinator

DH's work set up is a desk on a String shelving system. This sort of thing... He doesn't actually need any desk space as all his work is on a laptop. I do need more desk space (as I still do stuff on paper) and I have an Ikea desk, but it's not huge. I think 120cm wide

FlappicusSmith · 17/11/2025 16:23

Oh, I just realised the image didn't load. Here's a link to teh String desk setup!

HOpefully it works!

I have my own office which is our 4th bedroom. Kids have all left home so plenty of space. DH works from a desk in the dining. Couldn't work in the same space when we're both in meetings a lot of the day.

BrieAndChilli · 17/11/2025 16:28

DH wFH 4 days a week and although we have a study he prefers to work at the dining table in the lounge. I don't WFH very often as only live 5 min away from work but when I do I like to work in the study.

Peanut91 · 17/11/2025 16:32

We share an office and work next to one another. It's only for two days a week as I'm in the office one day a week and we both work four days but it has worked well for the past 5 years. If one of us has an important call that requires some privacy then the other moves to the dining room

In open plan offices you work sitting next to people and it works fine. Is there room for another desk in the attic? In most of my jobs I've had people sitting across from me & next to me and it's not an issue. You don't need your own room.

You do if you work for different organisations and you're having confidential meetings. I wouldn't want my husband's work colleagues overhearing one of my meetings while he was on a meeting in the same room.

We do. We need our own room so it’s soundproofed. We never have to make calls, though. It has to be completely quiet.

I had a garden office built. Properly insulated and electrics.

It’s my total woman cave. Have a desk for work in one corner with a smart monitor which doubles as a tv in the evening. Sofa in there as well for evening tv watching or reading.

Another small desk in a different corner for crafting/painting.

Lengokengo · 17/11/2025 17:51

DH has the study, I have a desk in a corridor to the attic! I have natural light and enough space, so it’s fine. Separate space is a must!

Look at every single space, even hallways!

Spangers · 17/11/2025 18:06

We have no spare room, DH is in a dead space on the landing that just about fits a desk and my desk is in the corner of the dining room. Not ideal but we’re on separate floors and it works till we can move to a bigger space.

BrightMintTea · 17/11/2025 18:13

Lots of households only have one proper workspace. The second person usually ends up in the living room with a small desk or fold-out setup. It’s not perfect but it’s workable.

TheSmallAssassin · 17/11/2025 18:28

When we were both working fr home during Covid we worked in the same room, which made it much easier for me to concentrate on work (body doubling!)

Thanks all. We definitely don't have any cash unfortunately to convert a garage or anything... i think realistically the only option would be to work in one of my kid's bedrooms and tell him to stay out of the room until i finished work. It seems that lots of people seem to have room for 2 offices in their homes - can i ask how people are managing this ie do you kids share bedrooms so you can have an office each or do you just own big homes would you say?

We both WFH and we share one double bedroom as our office. We both have good quality headsets so we aren’t overheard on meetings, and we use virtual backgrounds to block the other from view. I’m not sure what is considered a large home. Ours is a four bedroom house. We have a double room and the two kids have a single room each.

ThisMellowCat · 17/11/2025 18:42

When I didn’t have a spare room I converted the understairs cupboard into my cubbyhole. I was able to shut the door on it when I finished work

DeedsNotDiddums · 17/11/2025 18:47

Dh in the mezzanine office- similar to loft conversion. Me in the front room. We meet in the kitchen sometimes 😄

Chinsupmeloves · 17/11/2025 18:48

Screen divider in the attic?

Chinsupmeloves · 17/11/2025 18:49

Oh and well done on getting a wfh job after teaching, many of us are seeking the same! Xxx
