Overwhelmed by new job! Is this normal

I wa a lucky enough to get a fabulous new job , I am 3 weeks in and absoloutely exhausted! Even after sleeping I still feel shattered and not quite right. Its a totally new position that I have never done before and there is so much to learn, plus finding a whole new routine for my own life in terms of children, cooking, cleaning! Someone tell me it gets better because at the moment I’m really questioning whether it’s for me as I just feel so overwhelmed.

I think most new jobs are like that to be honest! You're learning loads of new stuff and adapting to new people and a new work culture, it's knackering.

I always have to remind myself to give it a couple of months before worrying!

Yes - I remember one job I started which was a complete change for me. I was asleep by 7pm every night for the first couple of weeks. Your brain is constantly ‘on’ trying to learn new things, make a good impression etc.

Yes, I remember dreaming about the new kinds of documents I was working with during the restless sleep I was getting, waking up during the night with my mind whirring and not being able to get back to sleep.

Yes I’m trying to remind myself of this! I just feel knackered like my brain is worn out, I’m hoping once I’ve been there a few months for my own workload of and I’m managing my own diary I will feel better! I just don’t even think I’ve felt like this when starting a new job, although I was self employed for 16 months before this so it could be why

Yes, it’s tiring, it’ll get better! Congratulations on the job.

i always told new starters in my team to be aware that after a month they will feel they’ve made a massive mistake and can’t possibly do this job. After three months they’ll feel it just might be doable and at six months they’ll be on top of it and loving it. Most agreed after six months that I’d been spot on 😂😂

shuffleofftobuffalo · 15/11/2025 15:48

I’d agree with that! I started a new job 7 months ago and it was the 6 month point when I felt like I was finally on top of things both in an out of work.

I know I’m probably being. Ridiculous and actually I should be fortunate to of even got offered the position but it’s all so new and overwhelming! I’m sure I will look back in 6 months and be saying the same thing as you to the new starter if there is one 🙈 I’m just such a creature of habit and accepting this job already took me out of my comfort zone

Congrats! Just been through a similiar experience with a new job. Hang in there and be kind to yourself. It's a massive learning curve in a new job and change as others have said.

Remmy123 · 16/11/2025 15:53

I started a new job last Monday and I have been extra tired all week - I think (hope) it's normal - learning lots of/ meting new people/ overthinking

thankfully this weekend I've had very little plans so I can relax

Hang in there, it will gets better. I started my new dream job about 18 months ago. The first month, I really questioned myself if the shoes were too big for me. I constantly felt overwhelmed and wanted to give up. 6 months later, I got queue of colleagues who have been with the company for donkey years asking for my support. 18 months later I became an SME for a few areas within our team.

I have really felt like this the last week wondering if I have taken on too much and doubting myself 🙈 I am a natural overthinker anyway so it really doesn’t help
