Work pension

My partner has been with his employer for 28 years. He has been off sick for nearly
a year - most of his health issues were caused by injuries ar work but his employer denies them. He has been told he will be terminated on ill health grounds in 2 weeks. He has a works pension which he has 4 different pension providers as the company was taken over multiple times. What happens with his pensions?

We need to sort this before he is no longer an employee. I read somewhere you can consolidate the pensions into one pot but don’t know what the pros and cons are. Thanks.

I consolidate mine with Pension Bee. There as lots of consolidating providers on the market these days. And each will speak to him about his options and what they can offer.

You need some proper advice as it depends on exactly what the pension are and where they are.

Start by getting all the paperwork together with details of what’s where.

Try MoneyHelper https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/pensions-and-retirement to start with or there are some good groups on FB.

You should be able to consolidate. You shouldn’t need to do any of that before your husband’s employment is terminated. Who has told you that? Is it that you will need to start drawing on his pension given his ill health? If so again I think you need proper advice on your options there as once you start drawing on a pension you can’t reverse it if he recovers down the line.

aside from the pension issue what advice have you had about his health and the termination? If you haven’t already I would really get some legal advice esp if the injuries could be work related. He may have a disability discrimination case here, or at least could use the threat of one to secure a better settlement.

The employer contribution will cease when’s he’s no longer employed by them
make sure he has all the log ins and paperwork but he needs to get advice about drawing down etc

Has he sought legal advice on the injuries sustained at work? He may be able to claim off their insurance for this / sue them.

What sort of injuries are we talking? Damage to hearing? Damage to his hands etc? Is he being treated for this? Any prognosis?

How were these caused at work? What sort of workplace is it - ie construction, health care, factory, catering? It matters because it will affect who the injuries may need to be reported to for any relevant investigation if it hasn't already been done.

So sorry you are facing this.

please, check out the pension benefits. Some provide cover for long term sickness, ours cuts in after six months on sick leave, to provide 60% salary until retirement age.

Dont rush to consolidate as that may render you worse off. They will get frozen. Contact ACAS and Hse immediately.
