Can I make this temp job permanent?

Hello,

Quick back story, I've been freelancing for the last ten years. It's been very hit and miss as the kids were little. They're teens now but freelance work is practically non existent. Keeping details vague for confidentiality, I volunteered for a local charity. All good. Someone leaves the team and they ask me to step in to help until Feb as a freelancer. I quote, they accept, fab.

I'm really enjoying it, I think I have a lot to offer and it works well around my family (part-time/home etc). Events they have had (with my direct involvement) have been ‘the best attended in years’ and I've also managed to step in and help in other areas with contacts etc. I was so low on confidence, it really gave me a boost.

The thing is, it was temp and always intended to be just that. They have advertised for a role that encompassed my role plus another. The money isn't great and it's full time on site. I've missed the window anyway because I didn't know they were advertising so soon but I would love to stay.

What is the etiquette here? They have seen how I work and the results I can achieve but they haven't spoken to me about anything so I feel like I'm not good enough. Likewise, I haven't spoken to them about it because I'm worried they will say I'm not good enough. My confidence is taking a battering.

What should I do? Having been out of the actual working (with other people) world for some time, I just don't know what to do next. Help!

Have a word with your manager, and the one advertising the role. Explain how much you like working there, and that you’d like to stay, but didn’t see the ad. Respectfully request that you are allowed to apply outside the deadline.

You can but try, and you’ll kick yourself if you don’t.

Agree with Bobby this is 100% one of those “don’t ask, won’t get” “shy brains get nowt” situations!

They may be assuming you aren’t interested as you haven’t applied for the role, and have been freelance for so long. or that the salary wouldn’t be high enough for you.

I’d get a shuffle on and ask for a quick word. Say how much you’ve enjoyed working there and would love to stay on if that’s an option. Explain that you missed the ad when it came out but would love the opportunity to apply.

Honestly the worst thing they can say is “no”

Shy bairns get nowt. Quickly find out who is responsible for recruiting/interviewing and explain you had not seen the job ad until now but you would like to apply, would they accept a late application from you? But move quick as you want to get in before they offer the job to someone else.
