Single mother looking for work

Lionbare · 11/11/2025 04:02

I have been a full time mum for 4 years. I am also now a single mum. My child attends nursery 8:45-3:15pm and I am on universal credit.
I don't want to get wrap around care. But I do want to find work that can fit the hours my child attends nursery.

Anyone in this position?
What are you doing for work?
What flexible jobs roles are there to look for?

Are there any self employed single mothers?
Yoga teachers?

How is self employment as a single mother?

Thanks in advance?

I know lots of mums that are cleaners either self employed or working for company’s. I think self employment is an option particularly if you have a particular skill. Part time jobs are often quite hard to find with necessary hours to fit within your kids (a lot require weekend working). The teaching assistants is often cited by job centre as a solution to get single mums into work but I think harder to fit in as a single mum as school hours don’t always completely fit with your own child also you are only paid term time and not much flexibility to take time off if your children are sick etc. office type jobs are ok if you can Negioate shifts that fit within school drop offs/ collections. I was lucky in that I was able to do that when I returned from maternity. I think it’s harder when you are out of the job market and trying to get back into work.

This time of year is perfect for jobs that fit within those hours, almost every supermarket will be looking for staff, many hospitality positions are available, usually doing 4 hour shifts

Check out places like Sainsbury’s, M&S, McDonalds, Waitrose, Iceland…etc, all often take on part time staff this time of year.

Civil Service.

My work had between 40 and 50 work patterns on the go last time i checked. They are an advocate for flexible working.

I too recommend the civil service. I currently work 8 to 3.

DS is in school nursery from 8.30am-3.30pm, I work in a different school for 3 hours a day doing admin. I do have a DH but he works away frequently so I need to be available for all school runs and school holidays, as I cannot use breakfast/afterschool/holiday clubs until DS is 5.

It's not much money (part time and term time only) and I have to factor in travel time as its a bit further away, but the hours work for me at the moment and if a role with more hours comes up at DS's school or a more local school then I'll have experience and be better placed to apply.

I'm a self employed cleaner, on uc. I've been doing it for years.
Once you have found a client, you'll start getting lots through word of mouth.
I usually clean 2 homes a day and take Friday's off. It's really liberating working for yourself, deciding when you want to take a week off. As long as you're reliable, punctual and rarely ill,it will work out.

If you want to dip a toe in the water- try something seasonal like exam invigilator
