Human vs AI screening CVs for interview.

A family member recently applied for a job in another country, but was not shortlisted. Feedback - HR does not know why the cv wasn't selected, as they think the person has relevant experience and education and meets JD criteria.

Howerver, HR not overwriting AI decision and instead has advised that family member use AI to write their CV in future!

I would guess that as a sufficient number of CVs had been shortlisted, HR not bothered with losing a suitable candidate.

Comments, particularly from HR/recruiting personnel, appreciated.

It’s just how it is. I recently advertised for a role and had over 200, fully qualified, experienced, educated professionals apply for it. Plus another 150+ timewasters who were mass applying and not qualified. AI screened because I, quite frankly, do not have the time to go through 350 CVs in depth and peel apart the best ones. AI gave me 10 great candidates, apparently the best of the bunch, certainly good enough to interview.

AI can be useful at helping make sure all boxes are ticked. I personally raise an eyebrow and push to one side CVs that are 100% copy/pasted out of chat GPT, but if you use it correctly it can be a good tool to make sure you’re using the right words and highlighting relevant experience - either for AI to screen or for humans. It’s a numbers game right now in recruitment and honestly companies are not worried about a great candidate slipping through unless it’s a niche role or there’s a shortage of that specific kind of talent.

Thank you @namechange3651 . Are cover letters emphasising matching relevant experience considered along with CV or discarded by AI?

I'm currently recruiting and agree with PP. I have 1 job and over 100s of applications. Regardless what the HR people say, there will be brutal culling going on to pick the top ones to interview.
Use AI to help match with the AI filter, but don't inflate experience. I had a few interviewees who had none of the skills their AI written CVs claimed they had. Its really annoying and a huge waste of time.

Editing to add that cover letters should be about why you are a good fit for the job, not repeating the CV.

AI screening is all about picking up on buzzwords. My son did an AI interview recently and passed. We had lists of buzzwords for him to try and use.
