I hate my job and want to leave without finishing my notice

I’m having a really hard time at my job working in a nursery, iv been here a month now and hate it, the atmosphere is bitchy. So I handed in my notice about a week ago and decided to work my notice period out and still work hard as I usually would, I was told I could have some days off for interviews I made sure to check this was ok. I booked some days off and thought all was ok, on Friday a colleague called me saying the manager and deputy had been gossiping about me saying they need to get rid of me. I feel so hurt by this as I always work hard I don’t even take my whole lunch break just so I can help out. Last week I was unwell I still forced myself to go into work and just couldn’t do it anymore so I asked if I could go home early. The deputy said I could not go home or leave the building even though I have lupus which they know about and lupus really affects me when ill. I had to message the owner who said I could leave. At this point I just want to leave without finishing my notice seen as they obviously want me gone anyway.
just needed a moan on here.
should I leave and not finish my notice? I have anxiety when I think about having to go into work there

I'd speak to the manager and ask if you can settle on 2wks' pay and you leave now. I wouldn't want to forego 3 weeks' wages without another job lined up.

So many nurseries are utterly terrible employers it’s weird.

Ask for 2 weeks pay in lieu to leave tomorrow.

yeesh · 09/11/2025 20:17

If you have only been there a month how much notice have you given?

AuditAngel · 09/11/2025 20:28

If you are in a probationary period one week’s notice is customary.

Thank you for the replies, my contract says I have to stay 4 weeks regardless of how long iv worked there, but they can give a weeks notice to employees. It’s not fair really. I do have another job lined up to start the first week of December.

It’s literally the worst place iv ever worked so much gossip. I’m room lead in the toddler room the staff I work with don’t do anything I do everything, I feel unappreciated, I’m working the 10 hour shift so 40 hours over 4 days I’m exhausted by the time I get home and missing out on time with my own children. Il be working less hours at my new job lined up

Sounds like you're in a strong position to negotiate leaving early.

You could say it's been made clear by some workers that you're no longer welcome... so if it would help staff morale, you're happy to leave now.

Try not to be hurt, better things lie ahead.

Get signed off for illness for the duration of your notice period.

Sick leave

pushthebuttonnn · 09/11/2025 21:22

Just focus on your new job and try your best to stick this out until the end. They obviously have sour grapes about you leaving. They are the problem, not you! Best of luck in your new role.

Unless the money is irrelevant to you, I would just suck it up and get on with my job. Don’t go out of your way for them at all. Don’t cut your lunch break short. Don’t stay behind to finish anything up. Etc. Never answer the phone to them when you’re not in work (so they can’t call you in to cover, change shifts on you etc.). Go in. Do what you need to do. Go home and relax.

Learning to brush off short term nastiness from others is a good skill to develop. I find it’s helpful if you can keep it in perspective - you don’t have long to go, they can’t have that big an impact on your life, etc. And see it as their failing that will still be with them long after you’ve moved on to bigger and better things.

But if you can afford to miss some or all of your wages then it’s worth asking about cutting your notice period or seeing the doctor and getting signed off.

jetlag92 · 09/11/2025 22:24

I would just leave, it's a low wage job and they're unlikely to chase you.

However, if you apply for another position the contraction for I have is "I've" not Iv and it will make you stand out as someone uneducated.

Thank you for all the positive comments, iv been signed off work until the end of November for both my physical and mental health. I just couldn’t bare another day in that place. I already feel much happier no being there!
