Please help - think I made the wrong decision

In March I started a new role in a very new environment, and was surprised that I really enjoyed it.
My lead left shortly after and I was encouraged to go for the role - also I wanted it as I had never thought I could get to that level.

im now effectively doing both roles as we haven’t advertised my previous job yet, which I appreciate is not ideal.

but I’m recognising that the bits of my roles that I enjoy are the previous job, and I find the aspects of the new role quite stressful.
i feel that if I stepped down already people would think I’m impulsive and disorganised, also we would have to readvertise etc - I would feel really bad.

but I think I want to go back to my original role.
i would lose about £300 pcm which is okay but not great, and I doubt I will get an opportunity to be this senior again.
please help.

You are being paid to do Role X for Role Y+300pm

You are learning how to do Role X and still have to do Role Y of course it is going to be stressful and difficult.

Even people who are experienced and undersand Role Xs workflows would have problems adjusting to that work expectation.

What support and training are you getting from other people at your level and from more senior leaders in your area?

Why have they not advertized for person to fill Role Y?

Can you do a list of what help you need to bridge the gaps in your prior experience?

Thanks @AnSolas
I think I need time to bridge the gap, I just don’t have it. I was really clear with myself that I would just do ONE ROLE in this job as it fries my brain having lots of different roles!

we haven’t recruited to job Y as we are waiting for finance to decide which department it comes under!

You need to delegate whatever you can of your old role and look for someone to mentor you while you’re learning the ropes. You might regret not giving it longer.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/11/2025 15:05

Yes that’s true
im in ‘old role’ today and it’s so …..meaningful?

Would you enjoy doing your new role if your old role was being done by someone else? For me, £300 extra a month would be worth it if I knew I wasn't having to basically do two jobs. Your company seriously needs to get your old role filled because expecting you to do both is not on at all

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/11/2025 15:12

@Devilsmommy i don’t know. It’s management and strategy and the bit I like is on the ward. I feel like my ambition got in the way and perhaps I felt that I should take the new role both to show ambition and to help out.

Dont be a "hero". Part of learning to be a good "manager" is learning how to create a safe urgent HR staffing need.

If finance are the key driver in Role Y being filled step away and step away fast. Their job is to see the monthly savings and budget adjustmemts as a benefit to the org as a whole.

You need to make the lack if a staff member someones (other than you) actual problem so that is your manager or some other senior manager whos job it is to match needed staff hours to employees and instruct finanace to sign off on the role.

As the functions and tasks you are covering needs a FT employee to do them and your new role was already a FT role (when your senior who had experience doing the role) left you are setting yourself up to fail by trying to do the two roles.

You liked the tasks and social contacts in your old role?

Is it possible that you dont like the new tasks as much as you are not being supported and that the new bits feel wrong due to the gap?

If so if given time you may grow into the role and see the value you bring to it.

I would say offload the other job tasks and stick with what you should be doing in your new role for another 3-6 months and give yourself time to adjust and get the help you need to settle into it. If after that time you still dont like it looks around to see if you can find a role which allows you to transfer your new skills and do the bits you are missing.

@AnSolas thank you - I am being supported and my lead appreciates that I am doing both roles and is protecting me - I think it’s that I am stepping up to a line management role, which I have done before, but I’m realising that my happy place is patient facing.

Are there roles which give you (patient facing with management skills) the best of both worlds?

If not as finance are debating the role you are likely better off to stop doing the old role and allow problems to happen and then offer to step down and fill the need. At the moment you have no role to step back into as your old job is not an open one.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 08/11/2025 12:36

It’s complicated- I could stay in my old role because I’m in it if that makes sense- it’s putting it out to recruitment which is the tricky bit.
i don’t want to line manage really, i think that’s my epiphany. I burned out before because i was doing three roles in one job. My brain can’t cope!

Well that is your answer.
If you dont want to do key tasks you are setting yourself and your team up for a failure
Go to your manager and ask for your old jib back.
And prep your CV as you may need to find a new job asap if things dont work out.

Good luck👍
