Taking shifts away during notice period

I am a self employed health care professional working at a client’s company on site running weekly clinics. I gave my three month notice about 6 weeks ago after some bad experiences with my line manager. Yesterday I was informed that they have recruited someone eager to get started and they have cancelled two of my clinics and given them to the new starter which causes me to have significant lost income. However they still want me to cover my other clinic until my notice period ends. My contract stipulates a 3 month notice period. My manager thinks he’s doing me a favour by taking work away from me as I had cited work and family commitments as the reason for leaving. In fact it’s because I have a new (awful) manager who does not appreciate me and nit picks.i have been in clinical practice for over twenty years and not had this before. I cannot get my head round this pile of shit and want to leave now rather than do as I’m told and cover the other clinic. I have other work so thankfully that will help cover the lost income of over £300. Thanks for reading.

Do you have a contract for a set number of hours?

LouisaGuy · 06/11/2025 11:58

Good question. I guess if the hours and location are not in the contract but are on a separate document then they can do what they like. It’s the usual process of being self employed but they expected to work set hours at the same specific locations on a set day but somehow that’s not seen as employment by healthcare companies.

Not necessarily - sometimes a verbal agreement or what has become routine would be enough, but the more formal the easier it is. If you’re being given less hours/ different hours to a written confirmation of your hours, I would be raising that with whoever is reducing your hours. If you’re on a zero hour contract or contract for fewer hours with additional as ad hoc hours, it would be harder to argue.

I have an email confirmation with the hiring manager (different to my current one) that confirms the locations and start and finish times of the clinics.

So the company have said I have no hours of work guaranteed which strangely also means I don’t have to cover the other clinic up til the end of my notice period so I have said I’m not working for them at all effective today. I don’t understand the point really of having a three month notice period in my contract as it seems to mean nothing at all. I wish I’d realised that 6 weeks ago because I’d have left sooner 🤷🏻‍♀️
