Can't decide which job to stick with

I basically have two jobs right now, but only working one of them, and I need to decide which one to stick with.

Job A
Been working there nearly a year and absolutely love it. The work is varied (though might not stay like that in the future) so I don't get bored, I'm mostly good at it and there's always someone to help if I'm struggling. Its a small company and I love the people I work with, get on well with everyone and, as corny as it is, they are my work family - people help each other with things, like fixing cars or giving lifts to work (many times I've been unable to use my car for some reason or other and I've gotten a lift with someone else, and I've given lifts too) and in the summer we played frisbee golf together after work. We're allowed to do our own side projects using company tools (after work) and can borrow the work van if we need it for moving furniture or whatever. Salary is not great but its better than I would get at my level of experience in any other company in my profession.
But its a small company still in the starting out phase, not actually making any money yet as still in prototype stage, so operations are entirely dependent on the investors, who pulled out without warning in the beginning of September, and the board resigned, which meant everyone had to be laid off (bosses included) as there was no money to pay us. I am still employed by Job A even though I am laid off indefinitely but because of the lay off I'm allowed to work elsewhere, which leads me to Job B.

Job B
Been here a month now and so I'm starting to get a feel for the place. The work isn't as interesting, just making the same parts all the time for the most part but they are training me to do inspection testing which might be more interesting, at least more challenging to the brain. Its a different field but there's some similarities (which is why I got the job in the first place, I was recommended to them because I'm good at Job A). Salary is lower, taking a few hundred euros a month pay cut to be here, which isn't too much of a problem but of course its not nice to be earning less, while working more (8.5 hours a day instead of 8). People seem nice, they've been welcoming and we play cards during our coffee breaks, but the ones I work with in my team are so young its hard to relate to them. But on the other hand its nice that there's so many women working here, in Job A there was only one other woman. And now I'm starting to get the hang of the work I'm enjoying it, though the repetitive nature makes me fear I'll get bored eventually, but its not like I'm doing the exact same thing constantly, and sometimes we get asked to do something different.
Its a safe job though, the company is doing well and so I can expect to stay employed (so long as I pass probation - two more months), and as I'm the main breadwinner that's rather an important detail. Unemployment is high in my country (10%) and its especially high for people with a foreign name, like me, so just having a job is really good.

The boss at Job A has been working hard to find new investors/grants/other sources of money, and it seems he may actually be close to getting investment now. I hadn't expected anything to happen for months, maybe a year or longer, so didn't resign after I got offered the new job. I had originally hoped to just work at some other job until things got back on track at Job A and then quit the new job but now I'm starting to have second thoughts. Even if Job A gets new investors there's no guarantee this won't happen again, maybe a year from now, and Job A will need to go in a new direction at the very least to start making money so the actual project that I've loved working on (the prototype) will have to be a side project. But I did really love working there (so much so I went into work even when I wasn't getting paid) and I would feel bad resigning and letting everyone down (of course I'm replaceable I know, but if too many of us resign the company would be fucked, because they would have to start from scratch with people who don't know what they're doing and there wouldn't be people to train them) but I'd also feel bad about quitting Job B, especially with the new training as I'm one of the only ones that knows how to use the new testing machine (and possibly there would be a pay rise involved with the testing, as its a different level of work and responsibility)

So yeah, I'm stuck and I keep thinking about the pros and cons of both and can't decide.

Forgot to mention, one thing I don't love about Job A is the paperwork. Not difficult, just annoying, and have to do it for every task.

What’s your personal situation? Any dependents? Partner?

It really does depend on much wider issues whether you should take the risk or not

Pipsquiggle · 06/11/2025 06:36

Culture and the Job itself = Job A
Stability = Job B

It depends on what you need right now at this stage of your life. Only you know that.

TheLemonLemur · 06/11/2025 08:02

Too many variables. Stick with B and if/when A gets investment reassess does it seem secure, long term. Also depends how important your salary is ie when you are the sole earner

I have a partner who doesn't work much at the moment (does paperwork for his dad's company and occasional small jobs) , after he had a bit of a breakdown last year, so my income is really important at the moment though his does cover the mortgage and electric bills at least. Have two children.

Have to decide if I'm going to resign from Job A before any investment deals get finalised because if the layoff gets cancelled I have to return to work within 7 days. I miss being able to talk English, no one minded at Job A but it feels different at Job B, so I have to speak my weaker language (though hopefully will become stronger)

Goodness, that’s very relevant detail

choose the job security given your circumstances op

I guess it does make more sense to choose Job B, even if its not so good. Feel bad though, and not looking forward to telling my old boss. I'll wait until after the Christmas party (which we're still having despite not being in operation, everyone just misses each other too much) though, probably nothing will happen within a couple of weeks.

Turns out the deal is being made this weekend so had to message my boss already. He was very understanding thankfully, and maybe I'll be able to go back there in the future if everything goes well.
