Rudeness at work

Birdsnesthead · 31/10/2025 15:49

If someone more senior to you (but not in your line management chain) sent you a rude, one sentence email with multiple exclamation marks and then copied in other members of staff, would you call them out or let it go?

I wouldn’t let someone speak to me like that in real life so should I have to accept it at work?

Depends how senior.

If very senior I’d raise it with my line manager to address with them. If only slightly senior I would raise it with them unless it was going to cause issues with the working relationship.

I’d actually be glad they copied other people in because then multiple people can see their behaviour.

Tamfs · 31/10/2025 16:03

I'd think what a twat and everyone else can see they are a twat.

Although it depends on the actual content.

sheistheslayer · 31/10/2025 16:03

Someone did that yesterday to me but it’s a shared inbox so my line manager saw it
the last I heard she had rung the person and started the call with “who the fuck do you think you are” Blush

HipHipWhoRay · 31/10/2025 16:05

Copying in other people just makes them look like idiots. I’d probably ignore it for now. I have a sub folder in my in box called ‘unnecessary’, which I shove emails into like that. Gives me a sense of control, and if I need to produce them, can do so (more in my fantasy world where the pricks get sacked).

BingBongBish · 31/10/2025 16:06

I would definitely take it to my line manager.

Oh you are a woman after my own heart! I have one called ‘Unhelpful’ and yes, when I’m queen of the world these will be the first pricks up for cruel and unusual punishment.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 31/10/2025 17:45

I might reply (to all) saying something bland like "thank you for your comments", but would probably just ignore it.

Lots of “it depends” in there.

It depends on how senior, what they actually said, how much power they have, whether copying everyone else just made them look like a twat etc.

In reality I would rage reply & make sure I save to draft so I could get it out of my system but not get fired.

The best way to “rage reply” is to make sure you delete the recipients from the “to” & “cc” fields so you can’t actually accidentally send without adding their email addresses back in!

… you can still send. But it makes you be a bit more calculated about the process!

& lets you really rage without fear of it being sent unless you’re ready.

von1471 · 31/10/2025 18:40

I’d email back and say “thank you for your comments, I will taken them on board”, although the tone of your e-mail says more about you than me.
Regards

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 31/10/2025 18:44

I used to with with someone who sent emails that were just "?"! Most of the time he just made himself look like a rude, dim dick.

FormidableMizzP · 31/10/2025 18:48

With no context, how can you expect any.useful replies?

I'm always wary of one sided stories with a finger pointing at a n other because it takes 2 to make a scene.

cuberoot · 31/10/2025 19:08

Oh come on, unless OP has killed someone in the office, there are multiple different ways of giving negative feedback professionally!

Halfquarterbag · 31/10/2025 19:11

Did this senior personage call you a silly sausage?

Forward it to your line manager and keep a copy of it. Explain how it’s made you feel and impacted your day and relationships at work.

You can’t do it head on. You should however document it and when you’re asked how you are , make sure you say you are not feeling the best.

PeonyBulb · 31/10/2025 23:16

Forward it to your manager and HR
